Is the 2007 Contra 17 as good as the reviews The wind range given by Cabrinha is for a 75kg rider. I weigh 94kgs and ride a Switchbalde 16. Is there anyone out there who has compared these two kites The guys in the shops seems to have experience on the Contra 14 and are pretty sure that the Contra 17 will out perform the the Switchbalde 16. I belive it will too, but by how much. I don't want to shell out $2500 and find out that I can kite in 14 knts instead of 15 knts.

If you have a 16 Switchblade already, rather fork out $1000 on a new specialist lightwind board, particularly given your weight. There are plenty on the market and they are more likely to get you a couple more knots than a kite will and it will save you a bit of cash.

I ride a 16M SB a lot, it is my own kite. I have ridden the 17M Contra back to back with it, and on the same board the Contra will go at least 2/3 knots lower, if you combine the Contra 17M with a purpose built light wind board like the Underground FLX 1.52 x 44, or an Airush Exile, then you will be kiting in sub 10 knots, guaranteed!
The Contra 17M is the best light wind kite I have ever flown, and you can relaunch it in anything over approx 6/7 knots, if you do drop it. Amazing kite.

My 16M SB is for sale!

just keep your 16 and dont bother with anything under 15knots its not worth it anyway, especially anything under 12 knots, people that say they kite in under 12 are dreaming the wind when it gets that low is not normally consistant enough.

Thanks for the help guys. And thanks to the guys who sent in the private emails. The board I use is fairly big already and I'd nearly have to step up to a surfboard to better it. I might even dig out some of the old surfboards and give them a go in the light conditions. I realise some guys like to go out when there is plenty of wind so that you can do a lot more tricks. I often find I'm the only one on the water because I don't mind working the kite to keep up the speed in light conditions. Years ago there would always be riders using the river mouths and the out going tide to enable them to ride in light conditions. Now it seem lots of people ride 12m kites and wait for the 15+ winds. I just like getting on the water no mater what the conditions are and if the contra will help me get out more than it sounds like it'll be worthwhile.

Jeez real wisdom from the paulio man wot next must be coming from ur nan's side Im betting

Personally havent flown either the 17 Contra or 16 SB but when you are talking LEI's that big I would be looking seriously at the 17M Speed from Flysurfer before deciding.
The Speed is a genuine lightwind kite which I reckon would be at least as responsive, if not even faster than any 16/17M+ C kite in any equivalent wind and provide a much lower & more 'fun' bottom end.
I may be wrong but its gotta be worth checking for yourself.
Just fwiw.

Hello Puppet
Thanks for the tip. I checked out a review on the "Flysurfer Speed 17" (http://www.kiteforum.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2318923) by a guy who had never been on a foil before and it sounded petty favourable. I've seen a few foils around but never this make of kite. But it's too late as I have already brought the contra 17. Should have it in my hands soon and it looks like the wind is going to stay at the range where I will be able to see if it is a good as I've been told.
