Hey jkeys
I was wondering if you could post a clarification on the kiting at Cott Bch situation and WAKSA membership for public liability cover there. Wandered past on Sat after a session at Sth Cott and saw only one visible AKSA tag (although others I spoke to were awaiting theirs), people were bodydragging down and coming in at Dean St Bch and were within 200m of that beach (not sure if that part was to be enforced or not?). Thanks for reminding users of this area re council requirements. Also has any signage gone up yet?

Also just a quick thanks to all I spoke to re the kiting situation at Cott... everyone seemed willing to talk about the situation without getting the ****s with me which was appreciated, thanks guys.

I parked at phone box for a look after a kite at leighton on Sat arvo and in 15 minutes saw two guys land their kites on the small phone box beach??? I thought landing and launcing at the phone box wasn't allowed, is this still the case? I didn't notice if they had aksa flags or not.

I'm local resident opposite the beach in question.

My understanding is that launching and landing is to be two hundred and fifty metre to the south of the phone box.
Recently boarders, mostly wind surfers, have been using the whole beach to set up, launch, land and tacking close to shore in the swimming area in front of the phone box.
As a swimmer and a local tax payer, I use this beach have been concerned with public safety.

will not be long before a member of the public gets seriously injured and/or complains to the council!

My advice, keep to the rules, give the public right of way, cover yourself and take the WAKSA membership, keep south Cott for kiting!!

agreed
appears our pole using friends have taken to dean st beach
seems to me the polers are now keen on north of dutchies groyne particularly when no swell
my observations are that at the kiters have been pretty good with the self regulation, using paths etc
i'm an aksa member but i havent worn the tag, not been questioned as yet

every one does the right thing, then a couple come down to where the kiters rig/launch, 20kn+ seabreeze and the old duck hops in for a swim right out in front,
what can u do? stay away til she goes, but need to see her first, i'm not generally not looking for swimmers there!

To my knowledge restriction for launching and landing kites is 70m to south of phone box and kiters are meant to stay 200m offshore at Dean St Beach (as for powered watercraft unless < 8kts) and be readily identifiable as having public liability insurance (AKSA tag on harness).

Was not aware of any council restriction on windsurfers... and know several who live opposite this beach who use it as their launch site. To my knowledge only kitesurfers have been asked to self regulate this restriction. Maybe Mr Keys can clarify this also?

Dudes , yeh I've been down to Cott and asked quite a few NEW/overseas kiters to move South 80m to Rosendo Street. All have been pleased to move up the beach. The council has agreed to let us kite South of Rosendo street. So no setting up and taking down kite at the phone box. If you land at the phone box and walk back to Rosendo street area I don't think any one will mind. If you drift down to the phone box there are lots of people now using this beach for swiming, so stay clear. As far as I know wind surfers can sail any where they like. I personally do not get involved with wind sufers and where they can sail, thats up to them. As for signage, we were waiting for the council to put up a kite sign,. but has not happened yet. I will ask John Geyer from WAKSA if we can put up a sign at phone box asking all kiters to move 80m south to Rosendo street. As an up date at Cottesloe, the new kite zone has totally reduced our interaction with the public by 99%. If fact we regulary only get 4-8 kites up at Cott now compared with 20 plus last season. Ive seen no local kiters launching from the phone Box. ScottyV I don't understand your comments about seriously injured/complaints to council etc. If you kite at Cott talk to kiters stuffing up. If you see any kiter launching at the phone box or kiting near swimmers talk to them and move them South. AS for wind surfers they are not our concern. They have been sailing there for years with no complaints.

Malcolm, people body dragging at Cott should be asked to move to learner kite areas. Dragging into Dean street is a sure fire way to get us into hot water.

Just a word of warning on the access issues at Cottesloe beach. I was talking with John Geyer about this and he made a very good point. There is no doubt that the ranger is not in love with kitesurfing and would like to see us all banned to the North of Exmouth, his absence from the kiting beach this summer has been conspicuous, and it can only be a matter of time before he gets fed up with impounding chihuahuas and cautioning topless backpacker chicks on cottesloe beach. He will then target us and if there is a lot of non-compliance with the rules about where people launch and land, and displaying tags, he may report back to council that the whole self-regulation thing is not working, and we could still be banned. So guys PLEEEEZE get those tags on and stay away from Phone Box

Don't know about any thing to do with 200m offshore from John Street. If we all kite South of Rosendo Street and give way to all other water craft, kite where you like.

Cheers
