Cottesloe Council voted to set up a working commitee to look at restricting kite access throughout the Cottesloe shire. The council was impressed with the WAKSA and all Cottesloe kiters with our self regulating action towards resticting our own kite spots, and moving south to Rosendo street. They have decided they do not want to BAN kiting in Cottesloe at this time (but that can change at any moment, with any bad press or accident) They are VERY CONCERNED with our presece at the Cott phone box site and the danger of kites over the road and into residences on the other side of the road. ALL KITERS PLESAE BE AWARE that we must all stay away from the Phone box site kite, park your car south of Rosendo Street, and WE ALL have to watch out for other kiters stuffing up. No begginners or poor kiters can be left to kite at these spots as they are just to dangerous. If you see kiters in the restricted areas please go up and ask them to move south. BW AWARE 1 bad incident at Cott will result in stronger kite restrictions. THE WAKSA will put up new kite signs in these areas to help control new kiters to Cottesloe. Pleaser e-mail me or see John Geyer or Nyall if you want any more info. SEe previous post that has all the meeting agenda that Cott Council discussed last night.

Jonathan,
If on light wind days in a SW there's not enough power to hold your ground at Rosendo street and drift down to phone box, then come in and walk back from there, will they still get angry? In the process of walking the kites will still be over the road for a short way. I've tried holding the kite out to sea but the angle of the SW to the beach means I get pulled into the water and struggle to walk back against the kite.

Hi Jess - I think (in most cases) if it is apparent you are unable to hold ground, an early descision (decisions that are going to end your session are allways very hard to swallow) to return to shore before you end up that far down wind should easily avoid this situation. I think our best bet is to play strictly by their (the council) rules in every case so as not to give any potentialy troublesome individuals ammunition against us. After all we are a user group and should have every right to access and enjoy these spots like every one else is for whatever activity/reason - just not at the expense of others saftey or comfort.

I need wind someone should punish those BOM people for playing with our feelings like that

Carl,
OK, hopefully it won't come to that too often. Got out in the marginal winds yesterday at Rosendo for about 45 minutes, hence the above question. Was strange re-learning how to wiggle the kite to keep planing. I'm so used to putting it low and hanging on in summer, took me a few tacks to remember how to actually fly the kite!

Jess , Carl pretty much on the money. As per any water sport, we at the mercy of Hughey, and losing wind or getting a bit excited and ending stuck down at the bottom of seconds can be a issue. The more we can stay clear of ending up on the beach near the phone box can only help our kiting beaches. If you do end up down there for wind or safety reasons and have to hit the beach, do so. Alway better to get to the beach if you are in trouble. Try ya best to keep your kite off the road and outta bathers space. A few stray kiters trying to do the right thing, occasionaly drifting, down past the phone box will not get us banned. This is far better than 20 mad crazed kiters crowding into the phone box, wave riding and pulling kitloops on top of each other. Carl and I know only to well , as we are two of those mad crazed kiters.

Thanks Jonathan,
Will do my best to keep clear of the old spot as best as possible in any wind strength and any wind direction. Sad, but as you say that's just the way it is now...

no one mentioned it...

but if you do end up downwind and need to walk back in such a way that your kite is over the road, should you not LAND the kite and carry it!?

Carl I reckon by the time Shane and I get in that box, there won't be much room for a Maccas bugger let alone another 18 people.

I would of thought if there's not enought wind to keep your ground whats the point in going out there, cause sure as **** the oldies & council is gona get pissed again.....and rightly so! further more whats the big fasination with the phone box anyway, not my cupa tee, cant handle that may guys out, very close to road and buildings. I been riding for 4 years and been out there a handfull of times, just dont understand it when theres so much more coast line to offer....

Pseusonymous,

Opportunities to get out on the water in winter have been few and far between so far that I've gotten to the stage where I'm more than happy to walk for half the session! Never thought I would but that's the way it is. I think most people would probably come in before getting as far as phone box, as I will in future, rather than dropping the kite. That is such a time waster.

I don't think it is a fascination with the 'phone box' itself that makes it so popular, rather for those of us who live in Cott and along stirling Hwy in direction of Claremont, Nedlands etc, Cott is the most accessible ocean spot. If you move up to Swanbourne there is messy shorebreak and chop; not much fun for waves. South of Cott to Leighton it starts getting pretty gusty from the Freo port in a SWly. Therefore I reckon the Duchies (and a bit further South still) to phone box area offers the best combo of wind, waves, and flat in the Cott area. It does get crowded, but so does Woodies, Brighton, Pinnaroo, Point Walter in fact most spots on the days when the conditions suit them.

Anyway that's why I go there when I don't have much time, cos it's close and decent conditions.

As per Jess, I live a couple minutes away from this spot and on the way home after a day at the office a quick 3/4 hour kite on dusk before I go home to my lovely wife and two small kids is PURE therapy. Driving any further North or South is 90% out of the question, also after 2 years of kiting at Cott is great to kite with the same dudes and dudets.

Yeah I see your point about the "LOCAL" thingy, and totally agree with jon's point below,

however your missing the point,

think out side the box, where's your sence of adventure, a five minute's extra driver can turn your session into a whole different day.

In summer this is true, not in winter.....for example woodie can handle a **** load of riders on all three bays in the same wind conditions.

I'm not saying dont kite there as I applorde you for standing up for your rights, whats I'm am saying is dont push your luck with them.
