Cottesloe council has put together a commitee to look at legalizing kite boarding within the Cottesloe shire. Kiting within Cottesloe at this time is illegal, but the Council has seen fit not to ban it out right. THe want kiting to stay in Cottesloe but do not to shoulder the public liability issues. On thursday afternoon the Commitee (reps from the council, coast care, Cott surf club and myself) were present when the council asked us to put forward a submission for kite useage in the Cottesloe shire. The Cott council were mainly concerned with public liability issues and how kite boarders without insurance can affect the Cottesloe council. The Commitee will put forward a recommendation that all kite boarders within the Cottesloe shire kite South of Rosendo Street and all kiters must have public liability insurance ( 5 million or above)The commitee has agreed that all kiters in Cottesloe must have there own liability insurance or be a member of WAKSA and be covered by WAKSA insurance. The council will require all kiters in Cott the have some type of WAKSA ID on there kite(probably a coloured streamer off the kite)so Rangers can ID kiters easily. If kiters do not have insurance,Cottesloe shire the rangers will by law be allowed to confiscate the kte (as per surfboards in Cott) This is going to council to be considered as a by-law in the next 4 weeks. If this kite by-law is passed kiting will be legal in the Cottesloe shire if the kiter has insurance.

Something to ponder.

Kiting is illegal in Cottesloe Shire until the Council passes a by-law to make it legal. The law states that - No powered water craft can come within 100 metres of the beach.
I did not realise this until thurday arvo.

not surprised it happened, and the outcome could be a lot worse.

concrete issues like this will certainly encourage people to take up WAKSA membership, which can only be good for the sport

just like to say thanks to WAKSA, and to jonathan specifically, for helping to keep the beach open. and of course, thanks to cott council

Thanks Jonathon et al for keeping this spot alive.

What's the situation with respect to launching 50 - 100 m south of the Dutchies groyne on the dog beach?

Will visitors be able to get temporary membership - or does it become a locals (WAKSA) only zone?

Maybe we should make Woodies a locals only zone (with or without a slider!)

Andris no probs south of the Dutchy Groyne to the Artificial reef

But be mindfull of the zone just south of the groyne

"The bone Zone" will shred kites and grate skin

very gnarly and sharp rocks in patches mostly on the shoreline but

generally not to bad -

though much friendlier in summer when there is more sand
