Just found a reasonably interesting post on kiteforum about what sort of marine creatures people have encountered while kiting, so I thought it might be interesting to start a similar one here to find out what the locals have come across while on the water.

So far, I've encountered:
* 3 dolphins at once (Hervey Bay), which scared the **** out of me until I realised they weren't sharks.
* 1 huge turtle (Hervey Bay), which also scared the **** out of me until I realised what the huge dark shape coming up from the depths under me was.
* Blue Bottles (Hervey Bay), not stung there yet.
* Blue Bottles (Middle Creek), got stung up high on the thigh....not pleasant at all!
* 3 small Bull sharks (Elliott Heads), all of which took off in a big hurry as soon as I kited over the top of them.
* 1 big Bull shark (Hervey Bay), cruising around in the shallows under the pier, right next to where we kite.
* Hundreds of Sting Rays (Toogoom), most of them around 30-50cm across, but some much bigger ones there sometimes.

One evening, after we'd all been kiting at the pier in Hervey Bay that afternoon, some spanner who fishes exclusively for sharks (complete with burlying up the water where we kite etc) hauled a 9 foot Tiger out of the water there I didn't believe the guy who told me, until I saw it in the local newspaper the next day.

I stopped on "Little Island" to make some adjustments to my bar recently in the shallows downwind.

Little island also known as Seal Island is 2.5 km offshore where I occassionally surf and kite. This is also a well known surf break and has had more than it's share of very large whites (5m )doing laps waiting for the odd unsuspecting seal.

I finished my adjustments, relaunched the kite and as it came to 12 o'clock, in the corner of my eye behind and to the left of me, my worse fear was realised. A grey/white point with a large black eye only 2 meters away and approaching fast head out of the water. I almost soiled my wettie before I realised it was a playful seal come to check out what was going on. Then she followed me out towards the break for a hundred meters before retiring to the relative safety of the island.

Little island on your own can be scary, that jaws music always seems to play in your head loudest when you are alone.

Good winds,

I've seen seals, sharks feeding, dolphins, flying fish, huge manta rays, probably a dugong but wasnt going to go too close to confirm the sighting, a turtle, some rather disturbing water disturbance, a huge flock of feeding seagulls that i was going nowhere near, a mad swimming dog, and a gruiezi.

None of these things worry me too much in fact i find it as a huge buzz and it all just adds to the experience of the love the nature/freedom thing.

What does scare me is the other crap i have surfed/kited in like oil, tampons, hyperdermic needles, raw sewage, brown/grey/green tinged water and used condoms.

There's a spot in Hervey Bay called Tooan Tooan Creek. There's a huge bat colony that lives in the trees along the creek bank just back from the beach. If the tides have been small, the amount of crap (literally) that builds up in the water there is truly disgusting. When high tide finally allows it all to flow out of the creek, it's definitely a place to avoid

Combined with that is the amount of junk that ppl throw in the creek. A mate and I were standing in the 7 inches or so of water flowing out of the creek mouth one afternoon, winding up our lines after a session. He said (pointing behind me) "Oh nice...check that out." I turned around to see a used, disposable nappy floating past me less than a metre away

To top things off at Tooan, there's a guy who regularly brings his 3 Great Danes down there specifically so they can crap all over the beach. One afternoon while the dogs were there, I was waiting for my mate to pick my kite up and give me a launch. Someone who was standing nearby shouted to me "Don't walk backwards!". I looked around to find one of these huge dogs laying a massive cable right behind me. After seeing the size of that (think 'mud being forced out of a 6" water pipe'), I can understand why he doesn't let them do that in his back yard! I yelled out to the owner "OI!! I hope you're gonna pick that thing up!?!" He said yeah, but then apparently just kicked sand over it and left it there after I launched and went out. Fkng grubs [}:)]

Hmm at Wanda,

- had a whole pod of dolphins appear out of nowhere and they scared the **** out of me until I worked out they were not sharks. They stuck around for ages though and caught a stack of waves with me - probably the most memorable kite for me as I caught a nice long right hander and shared it with 3 dolphins jumping in and out of the wave

- kiting through the schools of fish as they get divebombed by seagulls

- the greeny / brown water in a southerly has got to be bad for us

at KKK land

- some of the local birdlife wearing normal bikinis from the front but "string" at the back - now I know why Col was following them on the beach

and at Dolls,

- got stung some years ago by a MASSIVE nasty red looking jellyfish right up high on my leg next to my nuts. Got stung half way to towra and it hurt so much all I could do was body drag in to the beach

- and freaking bees in the middle of Botany bay - WTF?

I wonder where all those red jellies have gone? When I was a kid they used to be all over the bay and the Georges river, sometimes the schools were so thick that in light winds they would snag up on my dagger boards and stop my sail boat, and I would sit on my windsurfer and wait for them to pass. I can even remember capsizing my hobie cat off Mick Morlands Point and having to wait for the schools to pass before attempting to right the boat.
