Just want to know if anyone saw the accident last Saturday 10 of December at Cronulla beach around 4 pm? Just want to know what happened.
Did anyone have a chance to take some pictures?

Thanks!

not exactly - but there were 2 south american guys who setup next to us. When the wind suddenly picked up one of tried to come into the beach, but got lofted into sand dunes. Suffered a couple of broken ribs and concussion. His mate dumped his stuf with us to watch whilst he went to help. we packed up their kit and they returned later - all seemed ok in the end.

It was me the one who had the accident, thanks for the help!! I dont remember anything at all, and my friend didn't see what happened. That`s why I'm asking. I was lucky, I didn't break anything, just had a concussion and stay 3 day in the hospital. I wont kite agian without a helmet! I just want to see if someone took some pictures maybe that way I can remember something.
But anyway, thank you very much for your help!

i have a Gath helmet, seems to be what most people have.
I am just not really confident about what it would do if i came crashing down on my head.

It will stop sharp objects from peircing my skull but there is little impact protection there.

i guess some protection is better than none, and it has a visor to protect your eyes too..

Anyone had any experience with impact protection while wearing one of these ?
robbo.

I didn't see exactly what happened, but I was the closest kiter to you at the time - i am a beginner and was bodydragging. I was furthest downwind of all the kiters when the front came through. You came ripping past me on a bit of a downwinder, not sure if you were fully in control at that point (can't say i was either!). Off you went downwind of me and i was looking elsewhere concentrating on what i was doing when you had your accident. I pulled my safety and started rolling up my kite on the beach when i noticed that your slingshot kite had been disabled and was flapping over the top of the sand dunes and out of sight. I looked down to see you lying on the beach and someone running up to you and a 4WD nearby.

Glad to hear you are okay - it didn't look too good at the time.

Oh, and I was also the guy that had the problem starting his car afterwards. Thx to your mate for his help - got it started in the end - took awhile tho!

With regard to Gath helmets, they are tops fitting and comfortable to wear but they are not designed to withstand heavy impacts. there is a little sticker inside the helmets that warn of this.

They are primarily to stop the impact you might get from a finchop from a loose board in the surf, maybe protect your head from reef cuts whilst surfing and to keep the sun off your bonse.

They are not really designed for massive impacts that kiteboarding can inflict. Use should be to protect from board bumping into you whilst you fumble around relaunching a kite and keeping the sun off your head and face if you use the visor.

If you want a "crash" helmet maybe look at the Protec helmets the kind they use for skating and wakeboarding etc.

Good winds

I've had first hand experience in this department and agree with Kitehard. I was lofted and came down head first on wet beachsand. It was a hell of a bang, broke my neck and stunned me, but didn't knock me unconcious. I thought the helmet and sand probably spreaded the force of impact so there wasn't a single point of force. But they are definitely not designed for much more than small hit in the the head. I'm back kiting again but since my accident I always wear it.

I saw a young kid kiting in Wales UK a few months ago. He was wearing a huge soft foam head protector. You couldn't call it a helmet. It must have been 4 inches thick. I wanted to thow him at the ground to see if he would bounce like a superball. Whatever it was looked bloody good.

General safety note:

Avoid helmets with large surface areas,,,we were/are designed to dive bare headed,, add a bunch of (windage) if you will-surface area, and you just might snap your f'n neck on a ordinary face plant into the water...

Gath design explained...

PS. That's right, you cannot buy prevention, you have to earn it,, well? sort of,, much better to be lucky...

Lucky is definately the preffered condition to be in.

The more aware of your mortality you are the luckier you'll become.

You can quote me on that , if you'd like.

On an unrelated note: being too tan in Oz has aquired yet another (non-native) son er,,Sun related consequence,I guess???

you guys are blowing your zen rep...

best chill the f'out,,,neggrows

I just know what I read in the papers...

It's good then that Australia is the "lucky country"

p.s. I don't think anyone's ever had their neck broken from wearing a helmet that's too big.
MY enormous helmet occasionally gives me a bad back and I've had a few girls complain, but as for my neck? Nah.
