You could have a look at those new Predator footstraps for surfboards and you don't need to put holes in your board for plugs. You stick this plate on top of the board where you want to place your strap and then screw the strap into that. No resin, no mess etc. I got a pair for my surfboard and I really like them . you can read about them on: http://www.kitepower.com.au/cart.php?target=product&product_id=17094.They are pretty neat and allow you to move your foot also no chance of getting your foot caught in the strap if you wipe out. Another Aussie invention. There is also a post in this forum titled "New footstraps for wave riding".

mate i wouldnt put a row in, it will just weaken the board.
2 things i would reccomend:
1. predator straps habitat (stick on inserts)
2. get a stanley, cut thru the fibreglass, scollop out the foam so that there is bout 4-5mm round insert((get inserts for like 2 bucks)) and buy yourself a stick of aqua knead it from bunnings, knead it up then squeeze a heap in and then push in the insert, put some more round the top to make smooth so you dont cut your foot on the glass.
then leave bout an hour and either wipe smooth or sand then prob wait 12-24 hours and you are set. i did this mid last summer and the board is still going.

the stick on inserts are a bit better looking but yeh depends on what you want.

i just got some plastic windsurfing inserts and drilled the board and chucked them in with a mixture of fibreglass chop, Qcell and poly rezin. then i put 3 layers of glass over the top, brushing it down with straight polyester resin. then just sand it back and drill through the glass to the holes and there ya go. i wouldnt really bother with epoxy esp on a poly board cause its much harder to work with.

P.S if your resin mix starts to smoke then youve added too much hardener. Stir it or it will probably catch on fire.

It's very easy to do provided you've got a router, a drill, some plastic, a small length of stiff wire, sandpaper, q - cell, a small sheet of fibreglass and some resin (+ catalyst).

1. Drill holes in (but not through!) in your board where you want to start the rows.
2. Rout channels to the desired length, and sand around channels - area to apply glass.
3. Cut plastic to size.
4. Drill holes in plastic.
5. Mix up some resin and Q -cell to a paste.
6. Insert plastic with Q - cell paste filling gaps and bringing up to level.
7. Cut glass to size.
8. Mix up some resin, and paint onto glass over plastic.
9. Cut wire into small pieces and insert through wet glass into holes (this step makes holes easier to find once glass dries).
10. Once resin goes off(hard), remove wire with pliers and sand smooth.

This will leave you with a board ready to screw self-tapping screws into holes. Use screws that have a slightly larger diameter than drilled holes. Be sure to sand before glassing as resin will not stick to shiny surfaces.
This is the method that a professional will follow to insert straps to a surfboard.
I have followed this process on a number of boards and have never had a strap or "thread" pull out. This will not weaken your board anymore than having a professional insert boxes or than if you inserted single thread.

Good luck.

Fair enough chronic, if you enjoy your job more than playing with your surfboard.
Also, what do you do if you still want to surf your board and its got a great big pad on it ready to chafe your nipples and stomach till they bleed?

i have a pad on the front of my surfboard for kiting on. its the bollocks. if you place it strategically then it doesn't rub against anything useful. Or maybe its because i have toughened up with my nightly paper cut ritual and can just
handle it.
