It sounds like he caught you mid gybe??

Its not easy for a windsurfer to gybe. They need a 10m radius to do it in, often at high speed. Perhaps he thought he could get it in and stay upwind of you, with the shoreline quickly approaching he would have had to make a quick call if he can fit it in and looks like he ****ed up. Its not easy for them with the kiters ability to change direction quickly.

Right mate, firstly I didn't call the cops the Beach Inspector did. Secondly, the impact was so high, I could have been seriously hurt.
Thirdly, this guy has form - he has done it before.
Lastly, I thought he was cowardly in not manning up and at least apologising.
I was standing in the shallows next to him and asked him why the hell hit just hit me like that. He said nothing, just took off and left me with a stuffed board.

Heads up to Kiters who ride at Scarbs. I was involved an incident yesterday whereby I was deliberately rammed by a windsurfer travelling at high speed.
I had just caught a small wave in and had gybed back out. I noticed a poleboarder was about to catch a wave and bare off down the line so rather than get in his way and spoil his ride, I chicken Gybed back to shore and continued toward the beach before gybing slowly back out. At this point I was about 7 metres from the shoreline.

What happened then beggars belief. The same windsurfer came at warp speed from upwind and behind me and collided into the centre of my upwind rail. Luckily and somewhat amazingly, his rig only grazed my leg. I am certain had he hit me directly I would have been seriously injured and possibly killed. My Firewire board is now stuffed. He refused to come in and discuss the incident but rather high tailed back out like a scared little girl.

The direction he was travelling indicates that he bared off the wind and headed directly at me. This fact indicates intent to harm.

I know who he is and have made a complaint to the Beachie and Police. If you see him steer clear!

Take a teaspoon of cement and, well you know the rest...
It's a marine transport incident, report it to Dept of Transport/DPI if you must.
It's not an assault, maybe it's a Damage, but would be written off as an accident and most likely go nowhere.
You are wasting the time of whoever you report it to.

This forum amazes me.

A experienced wave kiter with years of experience of both surfing and kiting reports a dangerous incident that would potentially pose a threat to all kiters in the area and self same kiters / cyber space experts who know nothing of the situation, nothing of either party, and then rush to rash judgement and jump down his neck, saying he 'over reacted ' and it was an 'accident' and he is a 'pussy' for even complaining.

As some one who was actually there and knows both parties involved, I would like to add a few facts.

Ads was run down as he tried to get out of the assailants way - no 2 ways about. Chased down and run into by a well known crazy man who has a long track record. There was no excuse and no extenuating circumstances. It was an act of pure aggression and hatred directed to an absolutely innocent party by an out of control, small, frustrated, cowardly man who afterwards refused to engage with his victim and just ran away. Significant damage was done to the board and if it had been his leg the injuries would have been serious. A windsurfer ramming at 20 knots could be described as assault with a deadly weapon.

The assailant is a well known lifelong local windsurfer whose propensity for such acts is well known, not least of all on the water. The assailant has had health issues, which some think is an excuse. He in an outsider, his presence is tolerated by, but not exactly a relished part of, the local windsurfing community, none of whom would condone his behaviour.

Ads is just a decent guy trying to do a bit of wave time in crowded scarborough between work and getting home to the family. He is not aggressive , he tries to keep out of everyone's way. He just wants to bash out a few turn's and get home like a great many of you. He does not short tack or kite amongst the windsurfers generally but a long waveride and before you know it your'e on the inside trying to get back out where the windsurfers are coming in.

The assailant has a long track record. He tried to do the same to me 2 years ago and I was just able to turn out of the way in time. I yelled out his name and he realised who I was and that I knew he was. His anonymity gone he sailed away. I got him to the beach and he just kept running turning his head away and refusing to talk about his behaviour. Many times since then he starts his run at me and then recognises me and turns away, rathering to attack people he doesn't know, thinking he can hide beneath a veil of anonymity I presume.

Last year he ran down a twin tipper well outside the wave zone. He grabbed his board and dumped it miles out to sea never to be seen again, also a matter of record.

This is only the more serious incidents that I am actually aware of.

Perhaps you shower of whinging cringing cyber experts would like re-evaluate your positions now

....so he took a TT from a kiter and dumped it out at sea....is that for real. Surely not??

There is no segregated area for the poleys in Scarb!!!!

Everyone is welcome anywhere however the windsurfers all seem to ride in one small band (maybe 150 meters) of our shared massive beach.

Since most poleys are good blokes, they were there way before us and most have a great attitude, most kiters respect them by avoiding mowing the lawn in their playground.

All the downwinder crew still crosses through on their way to Trigg and it is always an opportunity to check the other clan skills.

Rather than being a proof of WA having issues, this is actually a great example of common sense, respect and waterman ship from 99.9% of the crew without any need for regulations.

Involving the police in an incident is unfortunately very likely to cause grief to all in the long term.

I am not going to name and shame the assailant, as the court of a public forum has no justice.

I did not witness the actual attack, I was pumping up my kite at the time and I spoke to a very shaken Ads on the beach immediately afterwards. I saw his smashed up board and identified the assailant to him when he was pointed out. I took his version of events at face value, as would anyone. Anyway what difference would it have made if he had got in the way accidentally or even called the bloke 'gimp-boy' for that matter, would it have justified a physical assault?

I don't understand where all this aggression and violence is coming from. Some people say it was ever so, but then you would be blind to have missed the spate of one punch killings, blindings, and maimings in this town at a rate that is unprecedented. Just look at what happened to poor Tauri Litchfield RIP. These aren't fights by in large, just an aggressive individual or individuals, often pumped on roids and meth, angry, disempowered' mentally weak but narcissistic, out looking for an unknown innocent on which to vent his pent up anger. His physical dominance making up for an otherwise hopelessly inadequate sense of self. You can blame the empowerment of women, the media with its culture of self preening celebrity, the crowding of our roads and beaches, the breakdown of social regulation through increase human mobility. You can in fact blame whatever you like but there is still no excuse for physical violence.

Ads did the right thing to take it further, as we as a society needs to actively condemn such behaviour otherwise you might be the next victim of it!

The twin tipper who lost his board I haven't seen since. He used to kite at Brighton. A jovial guy who had long hair and ring through his nose. He used to love doing big boosts on his old c kite. Perhaps that incident was enough for him to jack it all in. Should he be reading this perhaps he could come in and verify the story, but I heard it reliably from several sources.

Waveslave is right that there is no 'windsurfing' area, but good kiters do respect them and do stay out of the poley's way, because we command a lot more space .

To end on an upbeat note........I had a nice little session kiting near Jesper last night, all the other poleys had gone in, so no issue. He got a audience from me for a monster peak he smashed, but then he aerialed out the back. We both laughed as I called him a chicken, but really, it is much easier on a kite, as we don't suffer the same consequences. Nice session ........how it should be.

And to all those guys who criticise those who regularly kite there and can't understand why Brighton attracts a crowd of dedicated kiters and poleys on a short stretch of apparently 'featureless' beach , all I can say is "you cant teach a blind man to see", but we are more than happy that if you all stay away anyway.
