The guy had eye contact with me the whole time then laughed as he faded me from getting a great wave. I can clearly remember his face so will be keeping eye out for him. My mate said the same thing as windsurfer was also yelling at him. I have windsurfed and its not an easy sport allot harder to get good than kitesurfing..but this is no excuse for being a complete cock head.
Its a fact that guys down winding will be around windsurfers while they are passing through..if this happens to me again I will be chasing it up on the beach..I used to surf onshore at Mettams etc and had to put up with windies through the line up all the time?
That was probably me - i remember the incident and thought this might come up here.
Unfortunately we have to bear away quite a bit more than the kites to stay on the plane on the way out - by virtue of not having 1st and 2nd gear like the kites do. I can totally see it from your point of view as it looks like we are bearing away at you - but its the angle you need to sail to stay mobile unfortunately.
By us all being in the windsurf zone together we invariably end up with these overlaps of understanding.
The mega downwind sweep and short wind swell makes it even harder to get going on a pole board. It was simply a matter of misjudgement on my part - you were pretty much doing all the right things really and got a VERY close buzz. apologies from my end. I felt bad afterwards for sure - i wasnt really laughing at you but more a good natured shriek at the situation. But can see your interpretation.
- but i do offer an unconditional apology here and now.
This is possibly another reason to have a voluntary exclusion zone as many of the kite guys dont understand the different angles we have to sail to get out and vice versa -sometimes we are going nearly parallel to the waves to keep up pace and avoid knock backs.
When you take all this uncertainty - and then mix the two sports together going through the zone stuff has a tendency to just happen.
I am not in favour of having regulated zones - i think it can be done less formally - none of the areas are particularly great for wave form -so this isnt about exclusive access to some amazing beach break (cue waveslave comment) but i think kites and windsurfers in the surf is just way too confusing for everyone to ride safely together - and there will be mistakes on both sides - see my error of judgement above. We are dealing with humans here who will make mistakes.
Regarding the topic of this thread -I am not defending the actions of someone deliberately running over a kiter - that is plainly wrong - but there is a real sense of frustration among the windsurf crew at scarbs with the amount of kites coming through. This adds potential fuel for situations to occur.
Most of the guys on surfboards know what is going on , but we have twin tippers boosting through and landing in bad spots among the crew , riderless boards coming though too ,consistently downed kites washing through the break and many ruined wave set ups (you might only get 3 good ones in a session - the banks are that bad right now) - often its the "visiting" twin tip guys that just dont understand the flow that head out right into the middle of someones bottom turn set up - that any surfer could see was going to happen a mile off
This frustration is probably also borne out of the terrible state of the banks , downwind sweep and backwash.
To be honest- and having kited for 5 years back in the day - kiting is probably a better fit for the current set up as you can time bottom turns and reos with so much more flexibility. When the banks are half decent it all gets a lot easier for everyone. That isnt likely to happen till next spetember though..
I always seem to come back to Niall's riding at this spot- i dont think anyone on windsurfers is coming close to what he is able to pull off in such atrocious conditions - the big aerials are awesome and i give out an internal cheer whenever i see one. Quite a few of the windsurfer crew sail it well too - i just cant see how it can all happen in one area without further mishaps as humans just cant always make the right decision at the right times. Its a pretty small stretch of beach - literally 200 m if that.
