I'll probably be heading for Darwin in a couple of weeks (for work, unfortunately).

I'll be in the city, probably staying in a hotel. Is there anywhere close thats worth kiting? Is there even any wind there at this time of the year?

Any info appreciated, especially considering the bargain excess luggage rates mentioned elsewhere ;-)

Lee point is good, if not then casurina nudie beach... DO NOT head down lee point towards buffeloe creek as it is infested with snapping handbags....lee point towards casurina beach... and casurina beach is ok... also it may be box jellyfish season so wearing a steamer+ booties is life saving, and there are also a lot more sharks up there.. but i've kited lee pont and casurina... and thats where i'd go.. sandy bottom for about 100 metres out then i didn't go out any farther

when are you going i am heading up to darwin early july.
nightcliff is a cool place to kite this time of year also Vesties beach (where the darwin sailing club is) if you are staying in the city there is doctors gully that works in the offshore winds. but my fav spot is out the front of cullen bay in a seabreeze behind the sand bar. i wouldnt go to lee point because there are way too many people sitting in the bushes wanting to steal your car and the clothes off your back if you sit still long enough.
darwin rocks!!!

Bare sand Island is the all time secret kiting spot but you need a boat to get to it.

good winds and warm water

I'll be heading up in 2 weeks, mid May.
There's a chance I'll go near Nightcliff, so I'll check it out if I do. Doubt I'll get a chance to hire a boat and get out to the island, perhaps next time...

Thanks for the info guys.

G'day,

I live in Darwin and I can tell you where you can go. Winter (or dry season in Darwin) is usually sou-east to easterlies, so Lee Point is the go, half way up towards Buffalo Creek is a car park, we sail from there. Nor-easterlies to northerlies (or seabreezes) you can go to Casuarina Beach, the surf club. In the summer (or wet season) the winds generally Nor weasterlies or westerlies, you can go to rapid creek, or if you like Cullen bay (****ty beach) round to sailing club which is Fanny Bay. Forget Doctors Gully, when the tides run, its too fast, and dangerous, plus its a shipping channel, so if you stuff up your really in the ****.

When the winds up, just look around you'll see us around.

Cheers, Robert.
