Please don't call it daylight 'saving'.
It should be referred to as daylight shifting or daylight moving.
And what would happen if the result from the vote was a tie ?
Rather than moving the clock forward one hour......
maybe the time-nazis might shift it 30 minutes ahead instead.

The WA public will emphatically vote NO.

Waveslave,

I have a really yummy piece of lemon and pistachio slice in my fridge. My girlfriend asked me if I wanted it after lunch, and I said "nah, I'm goign to save it for after dinner".

So I saved it.

It doesn't mean I got an extra piece, or a bigger piece, but that I merely deferred it for when I wanted it. So in that context, I believe the word "save" was used as most people would use it.

Just like sunlight - not extra, but just saving it for when you want it.

I have resigned to the fact that it is never going to happen in QLD, so I feel your pain guys. My advice is to get the discipline to go to bed at 8pm get up at 3:50am when its just starting first light.

Advantage:
Less people on the beach and roads
Quiet as you are one of the only people crazy enough to be up
Uncrowded waves
Lots of nice old people on the streets
The list goes on, so please add to it

Disadvantage:
No Wind
Waste of daylight sleeping through it
Sucks if you work a 9-5 job
I deal with NSW and VIC customers who start ringing me an hour earlier of the day, so I am essentially working an extra 22hrs per month extra

^^^ Feel free to add to these. Try look at the brightside (advantages) though!

Big disappointment

It was a vote for couch potatoes, grumpy old people who find in too much hassle to change clocks and people outside of Perth who don’t like being dictated to by Perth politicians.

Maybe they should not have let people who have retired vote. Better still a government with a spine that has foresight and vision should just have done it and not fuss around with referendums.

Yeah Im with moon waxing. No need for expensive referendums...you just cant leave these big decisions to the ignorant general public of WA (Wait Awhile).

Should have simply brought it in...No fuss. Over & done with.

Anyways, still going to have my own DLS from now on. Well, try to...

you'd think the positives of DSL were a no brainer

looks like the no brains won

its pretty cool on the east coast to be able to kite till 830 at night and still be able to see when you come in to pack up

and the nine to fivers still being able to get a few hours in each afternoon

and the kids playing outside after dinner rather than watching tv

but i guess those that complain about it being dark in the morning when they get up to go to work have got a point to...
...i'm not sure what it is, but i have my suspicions it could be on the top of their heads

Now instead of kite surfing I have to sit home and watch it on tv

1- Most of the countries do not charge tax on sport equipment to help their nation's health. In Australia we pay tax for sport equipment and then we pay GST above it.
No wonder there are so many drug addicts here, they don't pay tax on drugs!

2- Kite surfing was a great fun and exercise, Now I have to sit home watch "THE FATTEST LOSER" tv show and feel sorry for a 50 yo man who cries like a 5 yo girl because he is emotional about losing 0.3 kg.

Sorry guys

If it wasn't for the wind being awesome here, I would move over east, what with the NEVER going to be DLS, No extended shopping hours, bloody blah, bloody blah. I'm suprised we even drive on the same side of the road as the rest of the country. You'd think we would have done the same as the Yanks with the Brits. "We don't want to be anything like them so we'll drive on the other side of the road".

A mate, formerly from Perth now living in Sydney sent me this email this morning...

"Oh god the daylight saving thing just spins me out! I seriously don’t get it…it’s almost as tho it’s a reaction against the idea of people having fun…that’s how stupid it looks from the outside!"

a reaction against having fun...couldn't have been put better during the campaign....

The people have voted...and the people are dullards...

I'd like to say that I cannot believe the result of the referendum. Unfortunately I lived over there for eighteen months so I can't say it.

It is the isolation, see. It has impeded development!

spewing daylight saving was voted out. Note that everyone in the western suburbs that uses the beach voted yes. I am pissed off but none the less will wind back my watch and have my own daylight savings by going to work earlier and leaving earlier

you YES voters are a bunch of faries and all obviously only kite in the summer

How about daylight savings in the winter months so I can still get it on after work when the storm fronts come through

Get real jobs that start at 7 AM instead of your shiny bum, cushy seat polishing, lah de bl**dy dah, latte sipping, office jobs and you'll have plenty of time to kite after work [}:)]

It was a simple desision. Do you like sunlight? And the majority of W.A. voted NO. Weird or what? The one`s that voted no cause they like to wake up for the early morninig walk etc. I can understand, at least they choosing to suit their lifestyle. But let`s be honest the amount of people that voted no who actually do get up at the crack of dawn is very minute. I know this because I have to get up very early alot because of work and I don`t see that many people out and about. Anyway, it`s over now.
One of the things Alex said made me think. Just before moving to Perth many moons ago I imagined it being a place where just about everyone were sun gods and goddeses. Fit, healthy and sport and the outdoors was the order of the day.(and I knew I would fit in perfectly with this mob ) This is certainly the image that is portayed of Oz overseas. Then I come here and was very shocked. The amount of overweight, lazy, couch potatoes is unreal. I see more people queing up at Mcdonalds and Hungry Jacks on a summers day than I see down the beach. What`s happening Perth? We have just about the best weather you can get, our coastal line is second to non. The amount of activities on offer is vast. And yet still so many telly tubbies walking about. Why? Someone mentioned no tax on sports gear. Maybe not such a bad idea. Never mind taxing alcho pops, we should put high taxes on burgers. But not chips I love chips.

Dude,
I think you've hit the nail on the head, too many fat, lazy, compalcent, couch potatoes, sucked in by the Americanisation of popular culture. Unless you're from overseas, you probably don't realise how damn good the W.A. lifestyle is and try to make the most of it (and the same goes for Queensland).

I have to say I agree with you on that Rick. I've always been into getting out and doing things, but I moved to the Southern US for 2 1/2 years and that was a HUGE wake up call. You really appreciate what we have here when you have to go without it for a while.

As for the whole 'get a real job' comment earlier. No thanks mate, I was in trades getting my hands dirty for over 11 years, I'm sick of sucking in crap for a living. I'll keep my office job where I get paid the same and I can still come in early and leave early most of the time if I want.

Don't worry D_Meredith, I'm with you on that one,... I have a desk job too, I like a nice soy chai latte, and I hate getting up early in the morning, BUT, I have a job that starts at 7AM and the payoff is that I get to kite in the arvo's when it's windy- despite commuting 65k's each way to do it.

Good winds :)

You nailed it phrase, I to moved here and was surprised by how far it lagged behind the eastern states. The gov still regulates what spuds are grown here for f**k sake.
I'm not surprised it was voted out when you listen to some of the parochial opinions of people. Change does not come easy unfortunately.
I think it's the isolation that does it. WA is a great place to live with a great lifestyle but for many that means sitting inside in the aircon in summer. Just look how many people are at the beach in summer, it must be a tiny portion of the population.
A great opportunity lost to join the 21st century.

How about just joining the 20th century?

Everywhere I have lived, NZ, Victoria, NSW, UK have daylight savings. The UK is brilliant, I have been out at 930pm midsummer and the sun still hasn't set!

I can understand northern WA not wanting or needing it, it doesn't make a difference when you get close to the equator. Just have big signs on the major highways where the time changes from DLS to non DLS!

There are so many aspects of the economy that benefit from it... Tourism, restaurants, sport that I can't see how it didn't go through, unless it was non-compulsory to vote.

I bet a lot of people who would have voted yes (ex pats from the UK, who seem to be in WA in droves) weren't able to do so (not eligible), which is a blow to DLS....

Hopefully you get some new pollies in with the stones to legislate it without having to resort to a referendum...
