Hi guys,

just saw on the local news that a 49 years old autralian male tourist was attacked by a shark while kitesurfing along the reef at Koumac (north of new cal).

He didn't survive.

He was part of a group of 6 that were on a catamaran cruise up north.

Sharing the sad news in case someone here knew him.

Far out. Tough times for the surfers family and friends.
Small world kiting in Aus, someone on here will probably be mates with him.
Way too young to die. RIP.

Sad. Condolences for all family and those involved. There have been a few other attacks on kiteboarders there. One earlier this year.

Yes indeed very unlucky. Though the area he was in has a large population of sharks, sailing/kiting close to the reef increases the attack probability.
Waiting for the expert's conclusion but Iwouldn't be surprised the attack was from a bullshark.
A young local kitesurfer was also taken a couple of years ago in the same area.

today's paper, he was on the cabrinha quest cat

Thoughts with the victim's family.

So true

In life it can sometimes be hard to relate to people who have very different experiences to us. For someone to be taken in this way by doing a sport we all love is really sad. I have to admit that as much as I absolutely love kite boarding but the thought of sharks is never far away from me(especially in the surf)

what cracks me up is you posted a link from SMH stating it's real news when SMH is the biggest garbage site out there .

But yes differing reports . Guess we wait and see what the real story is .

A tragedy.

Got this from Cabrinha:

"Ketchum, ID, September 6, 2016 – On Tuesday afternoon September 6th, approximately 3.40pm local time, Offshore Odyssey’s guest from Australia, an experienced waterman was bitten by a shark of unknown size and type while kitesurfing close to shore.

The victim was staying aboard the sailing vessel Discovery, a catamaran, for a 10 day kitesurfing holiday. The company has been operating world wide since 2006. Discovery was located just off the coast of Koumac, New Caledonia at the time of the incident. The vessel’s crew immediately realized the guest was in distress, dispatched a rescue vessel and radioed local authorities. The victim was given medical assistance by the crew while being rushed towards the harbor. The rescue boat met the crew of Discovery in route and provided additional medical assistance and brought the victim back to the port of Koumac, where an ambulance was waiting, however he was declared deceased by a doctor at 5pm. The victim was currently living in Switzerland.

“Our friend’s death is a terrible loss.” says Gavin McClurg, Offshore Odyssey’s president. “He was a remarkable man who loved the ocean. My crew and I send our deepest condolences to his family. We will always remember him fondly and mourn his passing. We hope that the love of family and friends will comfort and strengthen them in the difficult days ahead. And we thank the New Caledonia medical emergency team for their immediate and professional response and the communities kindness in the wake of this tragic accident. I also commend our crew for acting so fast and professionally and doing everything they could.” McClurg says."

Condolences.

May the love we share for the wind and water
be only exceeded by our love for friends and family.
And may our greatest regret in the risks we take for the former
be that we may not be able to express the latter.
