Random drug-testing is commonplace within many professional sports in the modern era.

Due to the dangerous nature of kitesurfing and the possible risk to fellow competitors and innocent bystanders,
has the Gravity Games management instigated an anti-drugs strategy by randomly testing for performance-enhancing
and recreational drugs to ensure their professional athletes are clean?

Could be serious I guess. A local IKO instructor warned off two guys at the beach the other day. They had just bought a new kite from adds in the paper. They were smoking dope and drinking stubbies while trying to rig up their new kite for a fly on the beach. Summer madness is here again.

It's a serious question.

It deserves a respectable answer.

Drugs in sport is a problem.

Good on him Fitzy!
Some of the worst, most stupid, totally avoidable, kitemares I have witnessed are caused by the guys that smoke dope before going for a kite.
I would support the concept of testing before major comps, just for the safety factor let alone the unfair advantage some substances would give a competitor.
There is a time and place for everything, and kiting is not one of them as far as dope or alchohol goes.

back to the topic.
do we class what we do as a sport or a pursuit.
are we talking performance enhancing (dont know any kiters taking them, maybe redbulls and lots of em) or suppressing (alcohol, strange tabs, dope etc)most guys perform worse the next day after a blinder.
pro sport drug testing tends to target enhancing but woe betide any competitor with a recreational drug in his/her system, media field day!
do kite competitors snort coke, drop e's or have squeela slammers before they compete?
i doubt it.
let what happens in the nightclub, stay in the nightclub.

that question sounded weird to me seeing as there's probably no money in the sport as a pro... so who would be bothered spending the money on enhancement drugs?

Mine too Slave, never kite downwind of anyone you know is affected by drugs or alchohol.
I never kite downwind of the showponies either, who huck tricks regardless of how close another rider is, or how close the beach is, etc.

I really doubt there is a need in this sport, most serious kiters that compete will not take anything that slows their reflexes. If it was a bigger sport maybe it would be warranted?

Anyone who takes anything that slows their reaction times and reflexes and then goes kiteboarding is a kook, and is stupid too.
If people think they can get away with it good for them, the only people they are fooling though is themselves, when the time comes that they need to make that split second decision, they will always blame someone else or their dealer, blah, gunna, gunna, blah.................

Ricta,
I think you missed the point.

Surfboards, skateboards, snowboards, and windsurf rigs aren't a risk to spectators.

A kite is a potential weapon.

I heard that a snowboarder was stripped of first place for half pipe in a big event after he tested positive to weed. Can't remember what the event was, winter olympics perhaps? Something of that level anyway.

yeah the guy in the winter olympics was stripped. but then weed was taken from the banned substance list same as with windsurfing in the olympics. it'll make your freestyle a lot smoother, particularly for guys going wake style

Bit heavy on the drama aren't we Waveslave?

Kites are weapons, drug testing, instigating anti-drug policies etc

Thought it was a free-style sport, where anything goes, and fun is the point.

Sure there's some risk- but thats what makes the whole thing more challenging and enjoyable.

Leave the heavy legislation for the over-paid, overweight worksafe inspectors, cranky old ladies and other whinging busy bodies who want to paint the whole world in high viz orange and implement procedures, documents and rules for every little thing.

get out on the water and Enjoy!!!!

Hi Fliya,
You've missed the point too.

I'm not suggesting random drug-testing for general everyday kitesurfing.
Far from it.

I'm simply making enquires as to the professionalism of a major sporting event;
that being the Gravity Games.
An event that may have hundreds of spectators (they hope) crowded onto a beach to view the proceedings.

If for some reason a competitor was under the influence of a banned substance,
a powered kite in the hands of that competitor could pose a risk.
That's my point. Do you understand the 'gravity' of it?

Many professional sporting events have strategies in place to prevent accidents due to negligence.

Up to now, there has been no reply by the management of the Gravity Games.

Regards
'slave

We are VERY PROUD of Ross Rebleade ( sp? ) in British Columbia Canada. He was stripped and then got back his gold medal the 1st year that snowboarding was in the Olympics. The poor boy lives HERE and one can not avoid the second hand smoke . That's his story and he's sticking to it. Ross is going to get back into it ( boarding ) this year. He hopes to win the 2010 olympics when it is held here.
