G'day All,

In at WSP the other day and a guy came in trying to sell a Naish Mutant "for a mate" and not having a clue of the worth of it.

When Pressed for more details about the board and his mate the guy was not to forthcoming with info.

As it all looked a bit suss Reg advised he would need a lot more info about the board and his mate as well as some drivers licence details. At which he started looking a bit nervous.

It looks as though it will be advertised soon in the Quoka.

The board looked to have been sitting in a shed for some time judging by the dust.

Now I don't know if this guy was genuine or not, but it just looked quite suss.

See yaz in the water

I'm sure I read something on kiteforum about the UK shops policy on this, it was something like:

If someone dodgey comes in with a board/kite for sale, give them $50 for it and explain that they have to leave their drivers licence details. Someone who doesn't kite will take this deal, if the shop tells them that is all it is worth. Then post the details and if the real owner can prove it is theirs they buy it from the shop for $50 (probably plus come beers), if it had been stolen then they get the details of the person who sold it to the shop to give to police.

The cost to the shop isn't very much, and there is a time limit to how long they have to hold the kit before they can sell it. It is also a great service to the local kiters.

What do you think?

Hey Gav,

I think if the shop pays money for it, it would be considered knowingly receiving stolen goods.

Not sure but it could go all wrong unless thye police were informed. Not sure, but it may be worth checking with the police on this matter.

Just a few bobs worth.

Next time get if we can get a car rego it might help if someone thinks it was their board. It might pay off considering the guy was nervous. I hate thieves.

When i used to work for Jez at 2nd Wind, had a girl come in with a 4.5m. sail to sell on consignment for her cousin, who had left the country. We took all her details etc, and so put it it up for sale. About a week later a tourist comes into the shop , see the sail and claims it was stolen from him up north two weeks previously.
So the police get involved, come down and take the sail , and all the details .
Here is the catch, the tourist who claimed it was his had no record of serial numbers, or where he had bought it from, even though we all believed him, so the police could do nothing. ALl they could do was go and interview the girl, and hope she confessed, which of course she did not.
The moral of this story is to mark all your kit the moment you unwrap it. This way, the police can actually do something.
