Just wondered, totally non-provocative question, have any of the noob kiters given windsurfing a serious go? (As opposed to the ones who windsurfed before they kited) I mean, as in, got the board planing, in harness and footstraps?

YES....2 DIMENSIONAL (not 3 unfortunately) AND NOT SCARY AT ALL.....MORE RELAXED IF YOU WILL. MOST KITERS KNOW THIS BECAUSE EVEN IF THEY HAVEN"T TRIED IT THEY HAVE SEEN THE BORED FACIAL EXPRESSIONS OF POLEYS THEY HAVE PASSED OR THEY HIRED ONE IN CLUB MED.

PS....I windsurfed (incl comps) for over 20 years...1976 to 2000 and never got seriously scared compared to kiting.........thats the addiction.

Wow...a simple yes or no would have sufficed...seriously, I don't believe you - how did you manage to windsurf for so long and still stay in 2 dimensions? Got stuck in a lake? Never jumped, never saw a wave? )And I never saw a bored face on a windsurfer; mostly it's insane grins or deep concentration)...most of all, I've never heard of someone sounding so disgruntled with windsurfing, yet claiming to have done it for so long...what's up with that?

Name how many kiters do you know who went back to windsurfing?

I have windsurfed for years including a year in Tahiti in the waves and i still love it (in fact i would love to borrow someone's gear down at brighton).

But Kiting is just pure joy,no mas,no wishbone,no huge board to carry around,no waiting for 30 knots days.

It is way easier than windsurfing to attend a decent level yet there is always massive room for improvements and you can go huge with big airs

It takes balls too, windsurfers may give us **** but i would love to see any one of them throw a mega loop and get bitch slapped.

I certainly can't do it,thought about it many times but it takes skill and commitment just as you would for a killer loop or a clean table top or barrel roll with a windsurf(escuse my spelling, english isn't my prime language).

I am still at a way higher level on a windsurf than on a kite but it is a wicked rush very hard to attend windsurfing (waiting, waiting, waiting).

Anyway, who cares, so long as you are enjoying your sport and go home with a big smile on your face.

ps:maybe try it somedays

YOU heard me right ...24 years of windsurfing...it was cool then but it was NEVER SCARY. NEVER and dont argue because you weren't born yet.

COOL and SCARY are very different to your senses.

Try kiting then building your skills to handle 25 kts. Then throw a powered trick and you'll **** your pants. Your mates will be mowing the grass in 25 kts on their windsurfers..after 300 more attempts you might land one but not to worry there are over 200 more tricks to learn.............but we are all gay so dont do it

CURRENTwindspeed sailing record LUDERITZ NAMIBIA .....kiteboarder ....look it up on the ISAF website..............geesus don't you guys read the bloody news.ITS OVER....you ain't faster anymore ...get over it and accept technology.....eventually it will happen to us kiters too when the next new thing comes along.
Hopefully we will embrace it because we are the ex poleys / surfers/ wakeboarders that embraced this change.
Its pathetic to see people like you bagging anything new as their mates bail out.
WE dont hate windsurfers...we haved just moved on to something new,.
Challenging each other to races after school like kids.......friggin gay man. The ISAF record stands..........the height is not even questioned by any self especting poley so grow up

ISAF does not recognise kitesurfing speed records!

We have encountered a lot of confusion about the ratification of the 50.26 knots run by Sebastien Cattelan earlier this year in Luderitz, Namibia, and the upcoming claim for 50.57 knots by Alexandre Caizergues.

WSSRC newsletter number 165 states: ‘Note that at the November Conference 2008, ISAF clarified that a kite-powered craft cannot be recognised as the holder of The World Sailing Speed Record.’

me!
after near 10 years of kiting,

and, a big stalled forward...not scary??

having said that, kiting is fun and i'll probably still do it in those 10-18knt days, but windsurfing is, to me, just more challenging...and so, more rewarding. at times

I'm about to start windsurfing and I'm getting a kiting lesson soon too. I went on both windsurfing and kiting forums to get some advice, the windsurfers were very helpful however the kiters were all negative and tried to give me bad advice so I'd go out and get hurt.

Windsurfing tricks look very hard and technical, kiteboarding tricks look like you get pulled up into the air then fling your feet around and do some body twirls or fling over the monkey bars then after 2mins you come down again (slight exaggeration) but you know what I mean.

Kiting also looks a lot like a copy of wake boarding too which is a real posers sport however very popular with the metro sexual because it's "cool"

Yeah I am a kiter- so metro is me...lol.

I think both sports have their pros and cons.... it is personal preference.

We all enjoy the same conditions but in a different way. It is about time we just got along- there is no reason for any angst or dislike, we should be having beers together after a session....

Luderitz is a pretty special place...personally I have no trouble overtaking each and every kiter I see, and I'm not even one of the faster windsurfers around. But I can't jump as high as they do - yet.

How about trying to stay on topic?

Mate, what do you smoke?
I can fly higher than a parachute with a good pack of weed but not when a pole board is attached to me.

The main reason we pretend that we don't like pole surfing is because there is no one else in the water to alienate them.

I promise as soon as they invent a new sport that they come out to water at the same condition we both will get together to hate them.

Cheers

I am a windsurfer for over 22 years now and was in a lot of different spots including wave spots and very windy ones like Karpathos(Greece) where it has almost 7-9BFT during Juli/August. I can do nice jibes (Power, Duck, Air etc), high jumps etc.

I am into Kitesurfing since 3 years now and still learning. What shall I say after my first sessions and jumps I was just on my windsurf board when it had 27knts plus.

For me is Windsurfing just boring compared to kitesurfing. I was out the last 2 days on my windsurfboard for 2 hour sessions and have done some speedy jibes and some tricks too but it is boring.... I was not even wet after my sessions as i was not falling in all over...

Yes I would say I can overtake most of the kitesurfers but it does not matter at all. It is not about the speed it's about the jumps, spins, loops and fun :-)

Most of the windsurfers haven't tried it at all. So just try it and you will believe.., yes and kitesurfing was the first sport that I was scared sometimes ;-)

Spell it out boys...reality is we are not recruiting any more kiters, we have enough hence the attitude...!

Wave sailed for 20 years from onshore slop to 20 foot waves. Loved the pole for a long time and divorced it when I found my new love. Had a go up north 2 years back when the wind was up 35-40 knots and realised the difference (will NEVER go back)

My info on the speed thing is
Polls Antoine Albeau 49.09 knots
Kites Rob Douglas 49.84 knots

Not too worried about the speed thing, that's just one dimension of our sports many.

Kiting, love it sic...!

Actually there have been a few on the windsurf forum who windsurfed a long time, went to kiting for a change, but went back to windsurfing because they found kiting quickly got boring. It must be a matter of personal taste - me, I could never be bored windsurfing, even just going back and forth on flat water, because it's just so much damn fun. And I sail in 10 knots, it's just a matter of having the gear for it.

So which is it? Scary or joyful? I've been pretty freaked out on some overpowered speed runs, holy sh** that's enough excitement for me....

Listen, this thread was NOT started to compare the 2 sports, or hear why some guys quit windsurfing to take up kiting. You can start your own thread for that. I'll post the original question again:

Have any of the noob kiters given windsurfing a serious go? (As opposed to the ones who windsurfed before they kited) I mean, as in, got the board planing, in harness and footstraps?

i first tried windsurfing... got a big 3.5 meters board, learned uphauling and going back and forth on it... then bought a 2.8 m board and couple of sails (5.6 and 4.7 or something like that)... started learning water starts and jybing... but the amount of effort to get the gear out and back, the amount of effort trying to get the damn sail out of the water after crashes wasn't worth it. I got planing few times, and that was definitely awesome feeling, but the road to get there was too long... the worst part was messing around with the sail and those chunky boards in the water, trying to get them at the right angle after falling when trying to relaunch... and then numerous times i wouldn't have enough wind... all those problems have gone away when i tried kiting. Sure if i stuck in for a little longer i would have achieved the higher experience levels, but the feeling when i first got planing on kiteboard, was greater than the feeling when i first got planing with the windsurfer... more versatile... king of like comparing riding motorbike to driving a truck.... Overall, whilst starting kiteboarding, i experienced much more excitement and much less frustration within the same timeframe i spent windsurfing. Maybe one day when i have more time and money, i'll give windsurfing a go again, although i'd never let go of kiting...

lets just ignore the trolls and celebrate the diversity

I started sailboarding in 1979 and started kitesurfing in 2003. While I kitesurf more than I windsurf, I enjoy both sports. Guess what: I've met plenty of dickhead polies and plenty of dickhead kiters. Luckily there are also lots of great people in both sports. Unfortunately it only takes one dickhead to go trolling to start all the stupid comparisons and idiotic comments all over again. If that's all you're doing with your computer then sell it and use the money to get a lesson in the other sport. You never know it might be quite fun.
