Andreas Dahle of Canada, has set a new speed-record. He reached a speed of 107.6 km/h (66.9 mph) on skis, using the new FlySurfer SPEED 10 m². He now holds the speed record on snow at Stormboarding www.stormboarding.com/pages/2/index.htm , by far.

Alex Sans is planning an attempt to break the world water speed record @ Lake Monmora, NSW on a 2m FlySurfer Rookie later this year. The water is very shallow and he will use a specially designed skim board (kneeling down for less wind resistance and more stability). He hopes to crack speeds of 100 to 140 km/h in winds up to 170km/hr!

"Hello BOM? I'd like one cyclone please. Do you deliver?" Seriously, is he going to get that sort of wind in NSW?

I can't wait for the day when kitesurfing cracks the overall record for fastest wind-powered craft on water, it's only another 10kts I think.

170 km/hr! That's about 80knots I reckon. The stuff that blows small children over......and rips off a house roof like on Tornado Monday.

if he gets over 100km/h then that will be the fastest sail on water ever... or is this just a flat out top speed, and not over the official course - i.e average over 500meteres or what ever it is...

Off the top of my head I vaguely remember hearing that the record is 52 or 53kts (over a 500m course), it was set by some specially designed rigid wing trimaran type thingie. So if kiting is up to 41kts at such an early stage of development, we've got a pretty good chance of taking it.

Then again maybe it's one of those diminishing return things, like trying to push a motorbike over 300kph, where every kph gained takes about 5 more horsepower than the last one..

was held by yellow pages trimaran at46.7 something set in 1993 at sandy point.

yeh thats right, 50 kts hasnt been touched yet... it is being chased hard by some windsurfers at the moment tho I think...

They say yellowpages looked like breaking 50... until it broke itself...

The latest Stance DVD has a report on the Mondial du Vent kitesurfing speed event. The last time it was run was April '04 and the fastest kiter was clocked at 39.79knots which is 73km/h. I guess the event is due to be run again imminently, maybe the record will get busted.

The Stance report also features an event (the name escapes me now) where they try to determine the fastest water craft. Kites, windsurfers and a yacht of some sort took part. Naturally, the yacht won and we came in last. Maybe it'll change one day but with my amateur knowledge of speed in these scenarios heavier objects with more surface area that can handle this sort of power are always at the advantage.

Anyone with a more in-depth & accurate perspective on this?

I've tried the Sandy point speed course airblast 10 (13.6m2) 25kts of wind kx137 board, the same time that Maquarie innovation was trying.

Using the same course markers and very inacurate timing the best I could calculate was a very optimistic 37 kts.

the big problem was stopping and I believe as in most tricks you need to sail away to claim. I didn't.

Session ended when I was hounded of the course by the maquarie Inn. crew who wanted 5mins of unused water ( scared of a single kite board wake) before starting their run.

So I can't help but think kites beating sailboards at speed is a way off yet.

as for 60kt winds in NSW. forgive my scepticism.

I recently received an email from Dave Culp, one of the most innovative pioneers of traction kiting in the world since 1978! His email was to protest at the recent announcement by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) that they will not recognize kite-powered speed records under its World Sailing Speed Record Council :-( I guess they are scared that kites might dominate when speed becomes a mainstream pursuit in kite surfing/ boarding ... whatever you want to call it?

Thats sucks... especially when you consider racing yachts are starting to use kites... everyone knows some of the last sydney to hobart fleet had kites on board but didnt gett he conditions to use them unfortunatly... Also in the last america's cup in auckland some of the boats were testing kites but non had the confidence to use them on the water... part of this was because of the million and one rules in the americas cup... be interesting to see if they appear next time around...

If its good enough for the sydney to hobart and for the oldest sporting competition in the world then it should be good enough to be recognised as legit sailing speed record... i suspect if a kite ever does get it everyone would consider it the best, even if not offically recognised...

I think we should try organise a windsurfer/kiting speed challenge
I understand one of the windsurfing clubs have some sort of speed camera would make for a pretty interesting site. Maybe the south eastern beach at woodies would be ideal in a big west/souwetser very flat water I have had some insanely fast runs here during those big winter blows

aus240,
try contacting peter lynn, a couple of years ago I was kiting in the estuary at christchurch and he was testing out a boat/kite combo.

as for a kite v windsurfer deal it already happens each spring at Sandy point,

does anyone have dates?

A large paper bag or perhaps more realistically a parachute with a guy dangling his toe in the water occasionally could do 50knots directly downwind in a 70knot cyclone.

Is this not a sailing speed record.. Do we sail or fly?

My understanding is that a record cannot be made where there is greater than 1knot of current in the direction of the pass. I would have thought that even in a shallow lake the current would exceed this in 70knots.

If you want to quantify how fast you can go, get a Garmin Fortrex wrist GPS and upload your times to any number of sites e.g. http://www.caloundracitysailboards.com.au/ccs_speed_page.html

For kites on boats => www.kiteship.com/

IMO v.boat < v.wind = x.ghey

Too kewl!

I want a 420 square-metre kite too.

To avoid getting overpowered, I'll have to use a smaller board I guess.
Then I'll attempt that most noble of all Perth quests-- jumping the Narrows bridge... The trick will be to land before those skyscrapers get in the way.

Carl, Tom Raddis and I have been discussing a windsurfing/ kitesurfing speed challenge using the WWA radar @ Woodies - it's just a matter of getting the time to organise it.
