This is what I did. As you can see I put the hook back on and left the slider in place (for future use).
If I want to use the slider I have to undo those three hex screws (a 5 min job), then hook the chicken loop into the big eyelet. I could leave the hook on there but it would probably get in the way - I haven't tried tbh.
