Fraser has many open beaches on the east coast that are kiteable just like any other beach on the sunshine coast. My only problem with Fraser and the North Shore for beginners is that there are a lot of vehicles on the beach which is not good for flying a kite on the beach or at waters edge. I saw a guy on the beach up at Waddy point but the wind direction / angle of the beach up there is not good. My suggestion would be the east coast section but only for experienced kiters and have someone on the beach looking out for you all the time. Don't go too far out the back - I've seen some big fish up there with pointy teeth.

The lakes are not kiteable at all. Your best bet will be a downwinder on the east coast - just get someone to follow you with a 4wd and make sure you set up at low tide with lots of beach so that you are nowhere near passing vehicles.

I was there in July. I drove most of the east coast of the island and visited all of the large lakes. I've been kiting for more than 8 years and I didn't see a single place that I'd consider kiting there. It's notoriously one of the sharkiest places on earth and if you get in trouble you're on your own. Not worth it.

All the lakes are surrounded by tall trees and the wind won't get in adequately to be of any quality.

As an ex pro fisherman for 6 years up and down the east coast from cape york to mooloolaba the biggest tigers and bronzies I've seen have been outside fraser island and out the front of rainbow/double island point. Heaps of the buggers!

But I've kited there - I just don't go in the between inskip/fraser, or out too far in deep blue water.

I was there about 4 weeks ago. It was about 20knots on the beach but breezy at lake Mackenzie but no white caps. Also very on and off.
