These are the days of kites being produced that come with claims of performance, each outdoing the previous latest and greatest.

we need to take a head check and remember that wind range is not Fun range.

every kite has a range where it is fully controllable with seemingly effortless power that allows the rider to easily track back upwind and pull whatever he does for fun back downwind without thinking "this is gunna take some getting back from."

Kites now can differ size for size in where this Fun range is which makes the job of demoing kites before you buy even more important.
These new kites all have characters that suit some styles and spank others.

granted the extended capabilities of these kites for coping with wider ranges of wind speed in a bonus, and does allow for reduced quiver sizes, But it is still the fun factor we need to consider in choosing the right kite for us as individuals.

Zactly... like how much muscle ache are you prepared to tollerate from flying a kite that has really high back-line pressure, just so you can teabag a bit less in gusty conditions or not have to come in and swap kites.

dude, your the one who is claiming like 11knots to 35 on your fones.

13m fone impact fun range for me = 16-19knots.

Carbine,
There in lies the problem.
People are out there relying on info delivered on kite company websites and forums in regards to "Wind Range" and with the advent of these High depower kites, that is where the focus has been.

Sure, in the right hands an Impact or Tribal will get someone an 11-35kt useable wind range. But it's time to shift the focus back to the wind range that a particular kite is fun to fly in.

Hopefully we are ready to get over the Wind Range competition and start telling it as it should be.

If I was seen to be part of that hype then i also want to be seen as part of the "tell it as it is Hype".

So in my opinion the Fun range of kites should be from the point of where the kite can hold ground without working it, to the point where you start to lose steering line tension to comfortably control power.

Any more precise definitions would be most welcome.

the wind range should be the point where you can survive without being lofted with kite at full depower setting.

And in someone else’s opinion the fun range is to them something else. It’s mostly about usability and personal situations and your interpretation of what is fun as an individual.

For example sometimes I enjoy taking my 9 meter out for a go on 12 knot days even if I can’t hold my ground because

1. I like the exercise workout as i am having to walk back up to my start point. (Bit of a fitness junky)

2. The challenge to keep the kite and myself going.

3. The aggressive working of the kites fun in those conditions more so than my 16metre because even though I stay upwind and able to do jumps, its soooooooooooooo slooooooooow turning I cant get any stress relief from it!

To someone else that just doesn’t float their boat and fair enough too!

Around 30 knots? I haven’t had any times while out on the 9 that wasn’t allot of fun with the air I was getting or the ability to allow the sheet out in the gusts. Once it gets Above 30 I pack it in as the conditions become too choppy in my situation anyhow. Then I am not having “my” fun

Notice how i was talking about my fun and its all about me? Because it is all about me!

With kite hype... users that hype (not review) a kite tend to wouldn’t you think because they are having so much fun on their kite? Dealers that hype a kite do so for the sales – I think most people on most occasions can distinguish between the two, even if they both have the same outcome of hyping a new kite the more users that hype it means the more people are having fun which basically tells you…… *snorts of laughter* your missing out? j/k dude

Hi Tony
I think Carbine made a valid point, you had claimed an unusually large wind range for some kites you sell in the past.

Perhaps you felt there was a competitive need to make claims about the wind range of certain kites you sell or prefer to ride?

Recently Bruno Legainoux (inventor of the C kite and the bow kites) started a thread on another forum, he talked about useable and emergency wind ranges, which seemed to be popular with the majority of readers.
His point of view certainly agreed with personal epxerience.

Perhaps it is time to only talk about the wind ranges of kites in those 2 terms?
Perhaps it is also timely to stop promoting the sport in an unsustainable way, by hyping safety, or that anyone can do it?
(this is not an attack on you or Fone kites)
Its just an observation from someone who was here at the start of this sport, and who now sees a very crowded, disorderly and competitive marketplace, with a surplus of manufacturers all struggling for market share, and using whatever means to differentiate their product and gain a competitive advantage.

So a 12M Bridled bow kite like a Cab SB or CB, or a Slingy TD, has a useable wind range for a 75kg rider, of approx 12/13 knots to 23/24 knots, emergency range 25 to 35 knots.

This wind range cannot be matched my a C shaped kite, c shaped kite manufacturers need not market their kites directly against the wind range of bows, they should stick to promoting other features known to appeal to the market segment or riders that want those features still, as a trade off to the safety and user friendliness of the extra wind rtange that the bow kite design has.

Like I said before, if I was part of that Hype I want to also be part of this hype.

At each and every moment I stated a wind range or in fact, a wind speed associated with a kite, it was what I actually did with that Kite. Mostly in front of witnesses( they where just waiting to see the carnage).

Steve, just ring Joel for a recent 13th beach session details.

However, those sort of conditions are only for a particular style of Fun. It is time to bring things back to the fun jargon that will be more useful in the future.

I would suggest that kiters take some note on the wind strength that signals the point where they start to sacrifice steering line tension for depower.

Report back your results.
