I used to use 3/4 gloves. It eases the bar grip a lot and in a way, makes the bar pressure a lot lighter. It helped when I started out.
Doesn't use it anymore.
Got addicted to that pressure now...

It's a pain when used in the surf as it get filled with sand.

I started using them after I slashed my hand and fingers to bits on the lines while a newbie. While I am still a newbie, I will keep wearing them (which at my current rate will be for a long time).

I wear my full finger diving gloves almost all the time; it stops sunburn 'cause for some reason sunscreen never worked on the backs of my hands, and I dont want my hands to look like an old granny's prematurely
They also reduce the risk of cuts from lines, rocks, coral, glass in the sand (hey Juddy! He lost a chunk of finger tip putting sand on his kite few weeks back); I have needed to surgically scrub my hands every day and with wounds that sucks .

And now I am lacking a dose of cement and it's just easier on my hands to wear them!

a long session with gloves equals narms, a phenomenon where by the suffer feels as though they have no arms. Try as they might the action if gripping the bar is simply impossible.

experiences person by person may differ but after extensive studies (my mate and I) we believe this aliment to be a real problem.

I agree, I bought gloves so I could ride the Autumn and Springtimes here in the UK. I couldn't grip the bar to save my life. Better to use no gloves, let your hands freeze and then they lock onto the bar anyway!

I can see the value in the sun protection aspect. I guy I know who operates bulldozers in the army has these gloves that leave his palms free, but cover the back of his hands to protect him from the sun. I don't know if you can buy them or if he had someone run him up a pair though.

I've got brand new gloves I bought to use in the Atlantic but I couldn't stand wearing them. Not enough bar feel in my book but everyone's different.

I use a pair of Henri Lloyd stealth maxi grip gloves.
http://www.henrilloyd.com/product_view.asp?prod_id=1093&back_url=product_search.asp&level3_id=2&search=

They are used by Yachties. They are light, very comfortable, protect your hands from the sun (my mum has just had 6 cancers recently removed) and are great on Bars that can be a bit hard on the hands. I have never had any trouble with loss of feel in my arms or hands. I use them all the time

from when I used to sail, I stopped when I started to kite so around 4 years ago I had gloves with out tips. To this day I have tanned fingur tips. This to me is sufficiently farked up for me to regret wearing them.

After 20 years of windsurfing and 5 of kitesurfing the backs of my hands could challenge any coffin dodger.

So when I remember I use the fingerless UV gloves.

That sucks .... so everywhere you go people think you have been sticking your fingers where the sun dont shine

It reminds me of the old school swimming sports programe. Ours was held in February straight after summer. All summer everyone wore boardies and then for the swimming sports we had to wear the Ol Sluggos so you would have 8 people standing on the blocks wearing speedos with lily white legs down to the knees and tanned below that.
We called them poo sticks or $hit waders.

I tend not to blister as much wearing gloves, but still get good kiter's callouses (which themselves then blister even inside gloves after a particularly big session anyway!!).

For Windsurfing -I used to use gloves when uphauling heaps, as a crappy rope cuts through your hands after a few hours continuous (fingerless sailing ones), but now find them too restrictive on the boom cause they thick material on underside

Since not wearing them back of hands burning heaps bad, looking for something just to take sun off em

Not too trendy (but minimalist so ok by me, thinking of getting some), but who is the fashion police, I thought we were all windsports enthusiasts, not fashion commentators, those people can all go to the races and talk about eachothers dresses and hats
http://shop.cancercouncil.com.au/p-185-solarcool-protective-gloves.aspx

Sure, I totally agree with the minimal kit idea, more gear sucks. But so does being dead.

Rather be on the water all day, and be able to do it the next day

To all those telling someone not to wear gloves, sure your entitled to your idea, but if it is so correct, why the need to push it onto others? (i'm just providing info, I don't care if they wear em or not)

Are you worried that you might have to look at someone wearing gloves, oh how horrid, maybe they don't match your straps...hhaahaha

Serious, who gives a flying if you wanna wear gloves or not?

Are we still in highschool, where you gotta wear an 'in' brand, as this is the only thing that can define 'coolness', not the fact that one of the best surfers i've ever seen shredding at the local was wearing gloves, so geez he must be way uncool, right?

"Please no gloves!"
A desperate plea?

I dunno guys, I weigh 105kg and spend a lot of time lifting heavy objects lol so I have fairly rough skin on my hands from gym, the first time I went kiting unhooked my hands bled!

I can see how lighter guys get away with it, but when you're a 105kg gorilla being thrown around its a different matter.

Also remember that when your hands are wet the skin tears so much more easily, the pain I can handle, I just don't like having scabs all over my hands!

Don't have gloves though... just too cool (sarcasm)
