So my wife has picked up some frequent flier flights to Tahiti in the last week of September.
We are going for 10 days, and it looks like it will be split 2 nights in Papeete, 4 Nights in Bora Bora and 4 nights in Moorea.
It looks like all three spots might be on for a bit of kiting, so the questions are:
*How much local kiting is there? I am probably an intermediate kiter, but not really keen on kiting solo in a strange country - would rather be somewhere that I can get a launch, landing and know other people are kiting and it is safe.
*How big are these places? I won't have transport, but I will be staying in reasonably swanky hotels - will I be able to get around to kiting locations?
*Does anyone have experience on what the wind in Tahiti is like at this time of year? I don't want to buy a Cabrinha golf bag lug my kites all the way there if I am only going to have 10% chance of kiting. Having said that, I probably have to anyway, because if I don't it will be blowing 30 knots and I will be spewing.
I am working under the assumption that equipment hire is a zero chance proposition.

If you are going with the wife, leave the kites and take a razor scooter.

not generally for the faint hearted but as there always seem to be some hazard somewhere, check kite surf tahiti, there is also a kite school in bora bora, although i only fished and snorkled there(f&*king amazing water colour )the lagoon between tahaa and raiatea (a day trip away from bora bora )can be epic for flat water stuff (not that i do any now) and you should still be on the end of some se trade winds although the problem is the wind can be a bit patchy and do 360 shifts some days ,windguru is semi reliable site .....the scenery is pretty stunning....but the most important thing to take is an industrial strength credit card easily the most expensive place in the pacific if not the world .... most towns have small eating places called roulettes (carpark with caravans serving food ) raw tuna with coconut sauce is not to be missed "poisson crue" as the restaurant prices are ridiculous especially at the hotels ...."Hinano" is mana from heaven on the beer front..
having said that quite a few times i didn't even get my kite out of the bag the times that i took it as the surf was good !!
its a bit like going to the beach without your board you always regret not packing it in
take some good sunnies so you can observe the local(s) .....flora and fauna !!!!

Firstly Thank the Wife, clearly a keeper!!
Tahiti is the only place I've ever been where the scenery is on par or better than the postcards. I spent a week on Moorea a few years back there was an intermittent bus service but even as 3 young clowns & a lot of camera gear it was easier to hitch.
Moorea has essentially one road following the coast around the whole island and so by standing on the appropriate side you'll get where you need to and meet some locals. We never waited more than 2 or 3 minutes for a lift.
I was there in October & was mainly diving, don't remember the wind, but the shark dives are sensational and the vis under the water is nearly as good as the vis above.
Learn some french, get your head under the water, hike in the mountains and remember the Aussie Peso is worth 5/8ths of F%%# All in french Polynesia!
