Great to see an event like the gravity games coming to Perth.

As a local resident and kiter of many years I can assure the organisers that there will be no sand covering the rocks at Cables until at least late December or January as it takes several weeks of strong sea breeze to drag the sand down from Leighton where the North Westerlies deposit it every winter. This leaves you with just a very narrow very sharp rock reef full of deep holes as those of you who surf it will know.
If I might suggest Dutch Inn again with another visitation to cottesloe council. SOS had a small event there last year that I helped to judge and the is an excellent elevated viewpoint, sandy beach launching, smooth water inside, parking, a large grassed area and groin [upwind] for photos and spectators. There might even be waves, certainly more likely than the artificial reef which needs 2.5m swell and low tide. Temporary loos can be set up. The council have been very pleased to work with the organisers of the 'whale bone classic' every year, which is surely a much bigger event and in a much narrower fore shore reserve.

I hope this helps

Regarding the rocks in October - I also tried to make this point VERY clear when i heard of the location selection but my concerns fell upon deaf ears. By comparison the beach / rock launch set up here makes Gnaraloo look safe and easy !

As a regular surfer of this break i can tell you that these are probably the nastiest rocks you will find in Perth.

An upwinder from your beach ,Niall, or a down winder from Leighton is realistically the only way to access this break (if it is actually breaking - slim chance at this time of year) without at least one of the competitiors getting shredded. Even Niall's beach is a tricky launch - but at least it is doable.

My constructive suggestion would be to bring on some beach marshalling at Niall's beach 5 mins before each heat in order to get the competitiors in to place in time for their heats. As a stadium Cables will be an awesome set up for spectators and film crews.

There is no spoon.

I share Matt's (& others) concern and agree that the location is less than ideal, however unfortunately it is well outside of my control. Bottom line is that there are many political issues that the organisers had to consider and City of Mosman came to the party when others did not.

The competitors will launch and recover South of the JZ on the sandy section of the beach - see the purple block on the map at gravitygames.waksa.org.au/ .

In order to ensure adequate downwind safety buffer zones, the JZ is alot futher offshore than some would like.

We will also have jetski safety craft on standby to recover any competitors before they get washed up onto the beach.
