Some helpful info for interstate air travelers:

Qantas allow 32kg checked in baggage, technically in 1 bag only, plus 2 cabin bags up to 7kg. You can also take another checked in bag up to 32kg for only an extra $11 !!!! They don't over-advertise these figures for obvious reasons but if you phone their enquiry line on 131313 they will confirm this. Also you can check the Qantas website at:

www.qantas.com/au/en.html

I have been to Sydney every year for 12 years with 60kg of kite gear (up to 2m long) plus a cabin bag of clothing and have only once been charged the $11 fee. It was a female check-in person.... (the guys are always interested in what sort of kites you have... where you get 'em etc etc..)

Virgin allow 20kg checked in baggage free of charge, 20-30 kg for an extra $10, 30-35kg for an extra $20 and 35-40kg for an extra $50 fee.

So..... take all 3 kites and both boards and have more fun more often!

Cheers
Neil Taylor

PS If you really really really fill up your hamburger/cheeseburger/boardbag bag there won't be enough room for that stowaway Marie Uana!!! :)

Virgin has an interesting loop hole as well. Although you only get 20kg free hold allowance, sporting equipment is given a 5kg tag regardless of weight. This means if you have a 2kg fishing rod it will take up 5kg of your allowance leaving you 15kg for your suitcase. If you have a 32kg kite quiver bag it is also only charged at 5kg, leaving you technically another 15kg for another bag. This is stated clearly on the Virgin website.

Heading over to Fiji recently the girl at the counter tried to charge me $125 excess but I argued with her for 1/2 an hour that my cheesy was ALL sporting equipment, she finally relented but was clearly peeved at not being able to sting me. I had called the Virgin hotline prior to check this all out, cos getting away with 32kg tagged as 5kg sounded too good to be true. Regardless, I had ammo in the fact it states it on the website and also that the call centre confirmed it. The check in girl had no solid base to argue which is why I guess she eventually relented.

Check it out on their website for yourself.

I can confirm the virgin pacific blue one - i have travelled overseas with them four times and each time with a kite bag almost too heavy to drag. no extra cost for it: sporting equipment.

Excellent.
