G'Day Guys and Girls,

It seems like only yesterday that I was being howled down on this very forum for being too extreme in my approach to handling thieves who steal your precious belongings from your car whilst you kite.

Do you guys really think that I was too extreme now after more and more people have had their hard earned kit stolen? The bleeding hearts condemnation of my previous post on this topic and the "they're just misunderstood kids with poor upbringings" approach will wear pretty thin soon enough. Sheish! Maybe they'll steal the forum, then we wont even be able to bitch about it!

I still reckon we need to do something ourselves like Dan says in his post; "mount a sting op and wait with baseball bats".

The police are not helpful, they are apathetic to theft, or should that be pathetic at preventing crime. The paperwork frustrates them to the point of not wanting to help the public. What options does this leave us????

I am not suggesting anything apart from maybe writing a letter to the local member of "sit back, bludge and get paid heaps", oh sorry, I mean parliament. Or write a petition to the WA minister of police affairs who recommends that we need NO MORE police in WA and that our police force is adequate. This is the same ridiculous woman who had her bag snatched by a THIEF whilst she was in a cafe. The bag was later returned by a member of the PUBLIC!

Crime is totally out of control in WA. Eastern states have very little to claim as better than WA in my opinion (hence my move over here) but the crime over here is an embarassment, and according to the Misnister for Police, the old "Ostrich trick" of "stick your head in the sand and it will all go away" will solve our crime issues.

I fear for our future if we get more politicians like her. Or maybe we should just setup, catch and bash the crims ourselves. Just provoking a little conversation. Hope you enjoyed the read

there's a lot of petty theft. Non confrontational, steal your stereo while you're out kiting sorta stuff. At least we're not being held up and car jacked (much).

Would more cops help? I don't think so. They can't patrol all the WA car parks like woodies (of which there are thousands). And I dont really like the idea of hiring a security guard.

But I've got no answers. Actually one solution would be to ban cash converters. In my opinion a very high proportion of the stuff there must be stolen. Cashies are meant to check with the cops if an item that comes in has been claimed as stolen. In my experience I've seen all my stolen gear turn up on the shelves for sale, even though it's been reported to the police.

A guy came into SOS the other day trying to sell us "his" surfboard. He didn't surf, it was obvious. The board just had to be nicked, it was brand new and he would have taken $100 for it. There wasn't much I could do (hold him and call the cops? based on a hunch?) I just felt sorry for the dude who'd had it stolen. I wasn't going to be a place where this guy could turn his theiving into easy money, so I sent him on his way.

If they don't have somewhere to liquidate what they steal, then it will hopefully stop them stealing our stuff!

And a happy story to end: Once john geyer had his kiteboard and mal stolen off his car. That week the theives took the gear into SOS and attempted to sell it to the shop. There was no violence, in fact the kids didn't even get touched, but when confronted by John, staff and a helpful customer, the kids quickly returned the stolen boards and I doubt will ever try that one again.

At the risk of making an infammatory comment

I once worked with a guy from South Africa, the then home of car jackings, home invasions and general anarchy.

There was quite an interesting little business going on over there that perfomed conversions on cars that enabled the driver from the comfort of their leather seat, to press a button that would see six-foot flames shoot out of the sides of the car and give any would-be carjacker the third degree.

Now not that I am condoning such behaviour - but if you wired it up to your alarm system, the results could be somewhat amusing for onlookers...

Would it be possible to get a simple camera instaled taking frames, say at every 5- 10 seconds sent via wire less link to nearest server, or put on a memory card , the camera battery backed up by a solarpanel, this contraption stapped to lampposts, high enough so that it cant be stolen itself, at the various hotspots. the hard ware wouldnt cost too much........

RayQ,

And then what, who will chase them ? The cops? Who will pay for the hardware ? Who will maintain it ?

An then it would be near on impossible to identify them unless you had a perfect shot.

Good idea but not workable. How about you just ensure that the gear is not visible in your vehicle. Cover it or make it inconspicuous.
Thieves are just out there for a quick buck so if it's not easy ie can't be seen then they move on to the next car.

A better idea would be what you suggested but not the need to set up all that network BUT a dummy camera. This and signage could be a deterrent if the thieves didn't know it's a dummy.

My thought for the day

Hurrah, i reckon thats a good idea. Many would be crims may opt out of stealin if they see a camera ( that obviously wouldnt be working). Woodies and Pt Walter seem like spots it would work (until the crims worked out that the cameras were fake)

if i caught one of these crims i wouldnt hesitate to use any physical force necessary, darren i dont know what u said that caused u to get harsh remarks on the forum, but i think they need to be taught a lesson!

How about this: at the road behind Crazy Waves (about 10k's north of Woodies), they had steel poles with solar panels for the night lights.

Several times, persons unknown went out with **grinders**, cut the poles down, and stole the solar panel/light assembly!

Unbelievable!
