I'm just curious to know if you ever find your stolen gears?
And how you found it?

I was thinking about a page in Seabreeze.com.au that we all register our kites and kite serial numbers and board number.
At least when we are going to buy a second hand gear we can see if its not in the stolen list.
Recently the number of stolen kite has been increased and I think we need to do something about it.

On the other hand I think its good for Seabreeze too, cuz somehow every kite surfer in Australia want to register his/her kite!

What do you think?

Good idea, could be hard to ensure people check the list before buying, it can't hurt though..

if you were on the beach or where-ever and a person offered you a board for half the expected cost, would you ask questions or just buy it?

if you answered " just buy it" call me 'cause i've got about 50 boards in my garage that a "friend" asked me to sell!

if you answered the other way, good on ya...just tell your mates.

I think its a ripper of an idea. And for a for sale post to be put up, they have to have registered their serial number on the site first. And if it matches someones elses, they have explaining to do.
A lot of gear seems to come through the buy/sell section, some stuff might be recovered.

About 18 months ago i dropped a reasonably new board at dolls point. i was unable to see it and figured it was lost. The next day a guy tried to sell it near kitepower, and steve went out and grabbed the guys phone number. Apparently the board had washed up on the rocks at Malabar.
Anway i rang this tool and offered him$100... to give my board back. Which i was happy to pay. he said that he could get at least $250 for it.
Steve and i went to the local police station and explained the situation, the police rang him and offerded to buy it, they took a squad car to his work place and picked it up for free. they also explained that he had committed a crime, "steal by find" and asked if i wanted to have him charged.
I was happy

I lost my first board, a Delta twin tip, at Point Moore in Gero.

I borrowed another very similar Delta off a mate who was a copper in town and was more into his windsurfing. He did a warrant about 5 months later looking for some stolen windsurfing gear and came up with my board.

He told them about the whole "stealing by finding" thing too, gave them a talking to and got my board back. I had to cough up a carton for him but was stoked to do it.

Apparently it had washed up north of Drummonds Cove a couple of days after I lost it.

Sometimes they do come back!

I lost mine in Bunbury and it was found 5 weeks later floating 30 miles off-shore of Yanchep Coast (300km north from where I lost it) .

Thanks for the fisho who found and rang me!!

So the moral of the story:
- have your personal details (i.e. owner's phone number or something) engraved on the gear... especially if yo get a sail maker or kite repair centre to stich one in on the kite, that would be too much hassle to take out... the only problem is if you are planning to sell it further down the track...

I'd love to see all kites and boards registered on Seabreeze.

I've got 3 second hand kites, 1 from a friend, 1 from Qld via Ebay and 1 from Canberra via Seabreeze. There's no reason to suspect any of them are stolen but it would have been great to check that before buying.

It'd suck if I now found out they were stolen by registering them. I'd give them up to the rightful owner though, and hopefully the coppers would pursue the sellers whose details I still have to get my money back...

Hey Guys,

It's a great idea. I record the serial number of every Ozone Kite we sell on a register to who bought it with their phone number, that way, if someone loses one or whatever, I can give the owner or authorities the serial number of the kite for purposes of ID.

Hopefully this will make it easier to track stolen gear.

I f#*ken hate thieves!

I've been ripped off twice. House broken into and ransacked once, and bus broken into and new laptop stolen. Never got any of it back!

Good winds,

I agree, it's a great idea .. the lost & found forum has done well, and I agree it needs more prominence. Developed a system last year which we never finished, that will be even more betterer .. so much to do, so little time!

Thank you all for supporting the Idea and I think this registering thing is good for all of us.

Hopefully Laurie will help us get there

Historically, salvage was promoted as a means to rescue imperiled property in order to return it to the lawful owner and the stream of commerce.

there's plenty more bulls%&t that goes with it. it depends how far out to sea it is and whos international waters it is.

Yes and no, over here in the UK, a container ship ran aground, lost a stack of its containers and they washed up on shore. People were salvaging brand new BMW motorbikes from the containers!

The rule is, you have to register your find with the local police, and if the owner wants it back, you have to give it back, although you are entitled to a "salvage fee."

I'm sure the rule would be fairly similar in Australia.
