I started kiting at the beginning of this year and have been lurking around on the forum for a couple of months now. Thanks for all the entertainment & advice!

Question:
Is there anyone who kites regularly in the Hawkes Nest area (Nelson's Bay I think). My wife's family has a house near the beach - walking distance from Jimmy's. Saw a lot of kites in the bay over Christmas last year but were not kiting then. Anyway she was there on the weekend and we hoped she could make first contact with the locals, but apparently no kiters in sight - could be because of the windsurf comp. Although we don't live in OZ at the moment we hope to do so in a couple of year’s time and are planning to spend a lot of time up there. In the mean time we do make regular visits to Sydney and Hawkes Nest and are keen to meet up with kiters that know Jimmy's well. We are both still a bit green (struggling to stay upwind) and would appreciate any advice on launch area, local conditions, rules etc.

Yes we were all there for Xmas thru New Years for the last couple of years. 10 or so of us last year and more the year before. Jimmys is alright with the WSW but if it turns very South then the wind gets disrupted by the land mass(Nelson) and makes for all sorts of gusts.
Jimmys is best in a NE near the sandbar where it is shallow for maybe 200 meters when tide is low. Even though wind is straight offshore, the water is very flat and gives even begginers a place to kite where they can walk to re-launch. Just keep an eye out for the end of the sand bar as if you go past that and can not go upwind, you will end up on the other side of the bay. We had one guy do that last year and he luckily had emergency money in his harness and took the ferry back to Jimmys. On the ocean side, the best is a downwinder from Tea gardens to Hawksnest(NE wind). You can drive on the beach almost all the way from Tea gardens to Hawksnest so that your support crew(non kiting girlfriend or wife) can follow you along.
Cheers

Hey Daz

Also keen to get up there.

It is also good to do the downwinder from the little gibber, then walk the kite over the dunes to the bay side and kite flat water for a while late in the arvo when all the people/boats are gone.

If we can organise a few 4wds we should get a lot of the local crew up there for a weekend
