Hey,

It is pretty easy to make one, if you have an existing digital video camera with AV input (like Samsung or Sony).
You just need to buy a good quality 12V colour video cammera, like the ones used in security systems, use some plastic piping and here you have your own Helmet camera.
It took me 2 days to build it, and the rezults are good, very good I'd say.
see the pictures:

Or you can spend lots of monney for a waterproof camera!

You just buy the 50 buck for a pair ones and use two "zip" plastic bags, one into other.
It is pretty effective, and if an accident happens, you don't loose too much.
This little two ways are pretty effective over open space, can go up to 3 k.

Good luck.

and the bigger the lense the better, otherwise that little drop of water after you last trick will end up covering the whole screen...

A little smears of water repellant (like rainex or alike) on the outside lens, helps for a while, however it has to be just a little bit and thoroughly "polished".

Thanks Galah, at the moment DT is using this rig to tape his speed record breaking attempts.

It looks like yes it is true, as this stuff is not ment to be used on plastic, but only on glass.
I used on the video head, a neutral density glass filter, as the ones used un photography.
If you don't have a filter like that, just go to a glass place and they will cut a round piece in few minutes.

Yes, using the end caps, it provides waterproofing to about 10m depth.
To assemble, use the PVC blue glue - very effective.

Azza, I am not deviant, I am a "shifter"

The video head used on the helmet, you can by a good quality one (at least 420 TV lines, the best choice will be 480 lines) in ebay for under 100 (it is amazing how the prices went down).
I've seen a bullet, Sharp camera for about 90 AUD.
Than you have to buy some 100 mm PVC pipe and the fittings (they will set you back another 50 or 60 bucks, a 12V rechargeable battery (Dick Smith electronics has a full range for very good prices), than some AV cable, the glue, silicone to seal the holes for the AV cable, and some adequate plastic piping with end caps to waterproof the video head.
From a Photographic accessories shop, buy a second hand neutral density filter (that will be the front cover for the helmet video head), than start to assemble all together like in the picture.
For simplicity, the large canister you can fit in a back pack (make sure you cut some holes for the water to flow freely out of the back pack), and here you go.
However, before putting your video camera in the canister and get in the water test the canister empty in the laundry sink.
It is a little bit of work and running around, but after than, when you watch the footage... believe me it is worthy.

Good luck,

silviu...........you are just amazing! I'm thinking Melb. does have some zanny (good in my book) people, certainly an attraction to the place. You should come out here with your helmet and film some of our beautiful coast. I can understand if you prefer to film the ladies though

Hey Gruezy,
I may be there next month. And always I have my camera ready for everything is interesting (mostly kitesurfing, although sometimes the lens is pointing to the beach too....).
Hope to have more luck, last time I was there, I took my 16m and all the gear, and guess what... It was flat like a mirror.. all the weekend.
I spent most of my time mountain biking and visiting good spots for kitesurfing, but no wind. But I've seen for the first time in my life, whales. That was an amazing site.
Any way, I hope to meet some of you when I will be there.
Cheers
