One reason would be that in placing this event in the forefront of national interest. placing the riders involved on a pedestal for the kiting community at large to look up to in all standards.

then setting the right example in safety should have the same consideration.

My question to AKSA would be; why were helmets not mandatory at the Wave Nats.?

Different sponsors perhaps
If it was a safety issue I would be putting waves way above flat for likelyhood of board-on-head injury

Do you think that having a helmet on will increase our risk of neck injuries given the nature of crashing freestyle moves. Personally i think you are more likely to hurt your neck due to wiplash. Maybe it would be better if helmets where provided as an option rather then a regulation. Look at the PKRA, the world standard for comps, are they forced to wear helmets? How much media coverage would we loose? Do you see many pics or video footage of riders with helmets

the best thing about helmets, is they make the video footage look like, well..................helmeted people doing some kite wakeboard experimental water activity.

wake up everyone, wear them if you want, but what next? sumo suits???

OK now let’s see:
I wear a helmet from day one (7 years ago) .
It gives me confidence, keep me warm in winter, and cover my little bold patch in the summer so I am not getting sun-burns .
And once, few years ago, I got a pretty hard knock from my board in the back of my head, as such that my Gath got split in half (not my head).
I think this is a strong enough reason to continue wearing my helmet .
But that's my choice; you guys have to make yours.

Cheers

I think helmets have their place.

I'll tell you one thing though, when I go out I'm not looking to hit myself in the head with a board or be eaten by a shark...sure crap happens, but let me decide if I'm too wear a helmet at the spot and on the day...............blanket rules are CRAP!

If theres kickers and sliders helmets for sure but if its just water it's pretty unecessary. Whatever I'm not really that fussed just most COMPETITORSI can assure you would much rather not wear a helmet.

I was expecting somone will ask this question.
No, I was dragged into the board as the kite was looping low before hiting the water.

helmets hold your brain in place
i got slammed flat on my back on my board and smashed my head against my board. i had a gath on and was dizzy and had headaches for weeks a cat scan later confirmed i had concussion and there was nothing but empty space inside my head. if you've got one and its comfortable wear it. don't worry "it won't happen to me" thinking doesn't work here, cause it happens

i dont really care ethier way but.. helmets wont stop you getting knocked out on the water because its your brain touching your skull not your head touching the water. also i can think of alot of other things that are more likley to go wrong than your head hitting something, personally i think they should ban the kites from the comp those being the most dangerous of all things with their steel strings.

lol.
What brand of helmet is being supplied Bigwavedave ?
I hope it's got the full cage thing across the front ?
Like a hockey-goalkeepers headgear.

You never know,
the twin-tip is like a meat cleaver.
It can chop right into your face, straight across the bridge of your nose.

Do you think there maybe reasons behind the requirement for competitors to wear helmets? Do you know the local area? Have you read the event permit conditions?

Before you troll and stir up more controversy, how about asking why this decision was made.
The Damien McKay memorial comp at Phillip Island proved you can still have fun with helmets on.

Keep things positive Spacemonkey or stay home.

Not wanting to cause any more trouble, the reasons for wearing a helmet are fine with me, but if you had just told us about the rocks and stuff and the council permit in your first post instead of getting angry and stuff none of this fuss would have been made I don't think. So much fuss about nothing, If to please the council to have the nationals we have to wear helmets then its fine with me.

Maybe the first aid at this level of competition needs to be improved....

Helmets shouldn't be compulsory for a non slider/kicker event, Unless its in some really dangerous location......Why hold the event there?????

The competitors should be given a vote ....im sure most would opt not to wear them.....

I wear a helmet on my bike, hard ground hard road, I wear a helmet when i inline skate hard ramp, hard concrete, while wearing a helmet I have had 7 concussions. yes proper helmet and everything. I don't wear a helmet kiting unless it's super windy or hitting a kicker or slider. Helmet doesn't stop concussion.
As long as the competition isn't held in shallow water where you could hit the bopttom making it un safe or to close to the edge where you could land on the beach. I don't see why helmets should be enforced.yatchies don't wear them, surfers don't wear them, iron men don't wear them, body boarders etc. so why kiting??
