The fact that you only managed 46 at a peak in pretty good conditions and the top riders in the world are running that consistently for 500m shows how difficult speed kiting actually is. I think a lot of people underestimate how hard for the top riders to achieve what they are doing now
Yep, spot on about speed kiting being difficult, I've got heaps of respect for the top guys.
I wasn't trying to say I am super fast, (the other speed kiter who I kite with, is unsually 2 to 3 knots faster) but for my 65kg I do OK.
Rider weight, skill and fitness, wind and water quallity, board and fin etc, all make a difference.
I'm still in the experimental stage, trying new things to see what works for me. eg this was the first time using the 9m. Also got a range of fins to try, board rocker lines and shapes etc.
Main problem with speed kiting is it's very hard to get the right conditions often enough to practice technique and try new stuff.
I'd still be doing back flips if I got 46 on my windsurfer having only just cracked a 40.
Speed is definitely underestimated with how much work and commitment goes into it.
The shed is your development area, littered with sacrifices to the gods of speed

I know I'm forever tinkering with weed fins trying to milk more from them
Kites have such a huge potential for some massive numbers, must be a real buzz locking in and letting it fly on the edge of sanity

Keep up the good work look forward to reading more
