Anyone have a guess as to how many days a year you could kite per state? say for a average kiter working mon-fri 9-5 in the CBD.

I have spent the majority of my time in sydney and I would say I get 40 days a year kiting, probably only 15 are good days with most being cold gusty winter winds.

Anyone have any numbers for the other states? just out of interest. Am guessing Perth would top the list.

I don't know the stats but I would be willing to say that Far North Qld would give most spots a run for their money (except Yorkeys and the Cairns area damn frustrating place at times!!!!). Places like Green Island, Lizard Island, Cooktown etc etc are windy for most part 8 to 9 months a year.

Dont flame me , but i have been recording weather for about 8 years trying to work this question out.
For WA, I would say on avrage about 90 days per year are good, safe conditions for the avrage Joe

Perth probably best capital, but i think there would plenty of others that would rival it on a smaller scale. The south oz peninsulas are great for making wind. Whyalla apparently scores high there.

Darwin....... not so great.

Green island seems to show up on the seabreeze windiest places alot. SA does not.

Well it is the 18th of December and so far I have had 15 sessions for the month. It's been windy like this since September, probably blow like this till April?. That equals 20-25 days a month for 7-8 months=140-175 days. Not including those winter days? Sounds a lot have to check the Bom figures. No! call it 100 days a year Going Off. Hang on I see you are 9 -5 umm maybe 50 sick days will give you the tonne Just don't be fussy and enjoy every day for what it offers. WA anywhere north of the crowds is the place to be.

15 kiteable days..... man that's sad. 9 to 5 sounds like a big part of the problem. two kites a twiny and a surfboard would help. last school holidays (end of winter...) I kited 12 out of 15 days. (there was a fair bit of hanging out at the beach waiting for it to kick in a bit stronger tho.) since then I reckon i've kited more days than i haven't for sure. I live near nsw qld border.

WA and FNQ seem like the places to be. I didnt realise NT got so much wind???

Unfortunately if you work in the cbd in Sydney its just impossible to get out of the city in time to kite even with daylight savings.

I've averaged 45 days per yr for the last 5 years in Sydney. Considering that I'm still windsurfing and only kite in summer I think it's a pretty good return. Living and working close to the bay makes it easier too.

FNQ was great this year, I doubt I could've kited any more and not got a divorce!
If you chuck in in a trip or two up north and out to the reef it's hard to beat.
Only been up here three years and it's been great but long term locals tell of very windy conditions in years gone by.
I'd suggest that if you had access to the right kind of boat, the coast between Cairns and TI offers some amazing potential.
As Capt Gumby said though, Yorkies has the amazing ability to frustrate!

you haven`t been kiteing long then?
most of the good wind is in summer in sydney and are nth easters with the ocasional stherly.
botany bay gets more wind than the ocean beaches so i sugest you should try kiteing there.this arvo is forcast 18-23knts south east. it should start to pick up around 2pm if were lucky.
9-5pm well you`ll find the best wind will be between 3pm till dark 8pm

Yeah I am sure its possible to get more days if your working/living close to the bay, or do shift work. Try getting from the city, to home (n.shore) back to the bay on a weekday after work...not much fun.

I`m pretty sure I`ve kited the most this year. Got going in march and kept going all through winter. I work mostly night shift and live about five minutes from safety bay and 1 minute from the closest beach. During winter I was out at least once or twice a week. This week I`ve been out 3 times and will be out tomorrow.
When I first started I thought I would only have to change my kite once every two years, the way I`m going it looks like it`ll be once every six months. Anyone willing to sponser a poor forty something year old kite addict?

It stands to reason as highs come across from West to East that the further north you go the more wind fetch is achieved. I also believe that once the Great Dividing Range finishes (just north of Cape Trib) that the blocking effect of the trade winds is greatly lessened. Hence the trade winds are stronger and more consistent from Cape Trib north, and then head offshore to somewhere like Hope Island or Lizard Isl and you get very strong and consistent winds from April to November basically anytime there is any sort of high forming a ridge or headind further into the Coral Sea.

Love that place, have also spent plenty of time of West, beutiful conditions but not as regular as FNQ from trib north.

i know port moresby is not in Oz, but we are pretty bloody close.

decent sized city with danger money for pay. and all the same FNQ SE trade winds. during the season you can kite as many days as you can get away from work. only the odd few days when the hi has moved out over NZ does the wind ease up, then its only a short wait for the next hi to move into position.

the outer reef is only 15 min kite from the beach too.

if you are super keen you could kite off the beach in the city, not he cleanest or the safest but a 2 min walk from you office. or you can go the local kite beach 15 min drive away.

did i mention the water temp? never goes below 28 during winter.

Lived in North Queensland and visited WA for summers. Haunted Margs Perth and lived in some of the windiest spots in Europe.
Now I live in Geraldton if that makes sense. Not interested in sh-t wind or crowds.
Truck loads of work here if you're a tradie.
Daylight saving gives you until 2100 kite time. Doesnt take long to get to the beach, there are only 10 traffic lights in town which is 5 hour north of Perth.
But there are back streets around the 1 set of lights you may need to pass through on the way to the sickest wave beach in the middle of town. Merry Christmas.

LIZARD ISLAND pretty much from march to November every day and night

Cooktown is closest to Lizard- it starts blowing at Cape Tribulation, you can see the windline flying over it. Its amazing!!

Whats the annual wind average in Melbourne and Perth?

The best capital city to live in if you like waves with your wind has to be Sydney. No other capital has any real surf to speak of. I must say though that if I worked 9 - 5 in Sydney I would sell my wind gear and get a motor bike.
