it was a zepplin, a vintage german airship filled with hydrogen. (bring on the corrections)
it crashed and burned......then..... crashed... um... again......."oh the humanity" etc.

often kites flying with too tight 5th line or in too light wind will fly past the operator and fall out of the sky resembling the hindenberg on that fateful day.

Cheers Col,

Seems only sometimes when I jump it occurs, I look up and see the lines have gone slack. Then kite gently floating downwind a few meters, before turning LE down powering up and slamming into the water. After which your looking for limbs that detached themselve's during the unvoluntry and unexpecting body drag.

Umm silly question coming up... Is there a solution to lessen the impact, or should you pull the safety if you anticpate this happening.

I only practice jumps in waist deep water at this stage. So I could pull the safety and reset the lines more often than not.

also can happen if you don,t have enough back line tension on (4 line) bow/sle kites. last year i had a t/d wich was prone to it, has not happend so far on my 07 waroo.

.....and then the fun begins, do you run to save it or do you abandon ship. Always funny to see someone try and save it to have them power up a meter from the sand.

i had the turbo diesel do this repeatedly, and recently the rrd hypertype rarely- both were doing it at the zenith, overflying forwards with no back line pressure, and in gusty and light conditions.

Even though it feels wrong to do it, a sharp pull on the centre lines as it starts to happen stops it from inverting, and then plummeting.

that can caused by you swinging under the kite too far, another cause of the hindenberg, easy to do on bigger kites too. Even a well tuned kite will hindenberg in this situation.

when you send the kite try returning it alot sooner. everyone says 2'oclock, but with a slow kite you gotta do it alot earlier, try sending it 12 o'clock then turning back, then go a little further.
practice practice.

does that really work for you?? in my mind it would cause the problem, but like you said, "it feels wrong." whatever works, i might give this a go sometime,.... might not.

I regards to what you should do after it has hindeburged, you have 2 options (are there more? please correct me)

One is to run away from the kite desperatly pulling on the bar to tension up witchever line looks like it might tighten first. The objective being to get the lines tight enough to swiftly turn the kite back skyward.
This will pull alot, but you'll be ready for it and there is no kite tearing jar as is slams face first onto the water.

Other that, ditch the safety. I normally go for both. Run, steer the kite with one hand and have the other on the safety just incase.

james

on a further note often a kite that hindeburgs and lands with no tension on any lines will do a complete barrel-roll downwind...which sucks if you have 5 line.

I've tried the run, and the safety release ways before finding the sharp pull on the centres works a treat each time for me. i usually get the oh **** feeling when the lines go slack, and look up to see the kite starting to nose down from the zenith, pulling quickly on the centres flares the nose of the kite back into the windstream, and it flies up again, usually pretty gently. This method hasn't ever failed me since I first tried it in light conditions. I have only tried it on the turbo d, and the rrd , but would guess an invert happens the same style of kite regardless of brand??

If the kite overflies you are number of things could have happened
Jumping - you haven't turn the kite down, or sent the kite too far back in the window, simple turn the kite back down into the window, it will also soften your landing.
When not jumping, sheeting in or out, or over sheeting and stalling the kite when the kite is at the zenith, Sheet out, turn it down into the window, or last resort, grap your front lines and pull hard.

Basic's of kite 101

or get a flying pillow and join the 2% of people that have come out of the closet

I just had a couple of good sessions on a demo Venom2 and I can't say enough about them......if I could afford it, I'd buy one right now

The few times I ended up in a situation where my LEI kites would luff and fall, the V2 just slowly flattened out and floated backwards until the lines went tight again, then it regained its shape and continued as normal. It's the wierdest thing to see your kite totally flat in the air!

will happen to everyone during first season, hopefully by second you will have had enough time on water to realize when its going to arse over head (TE/LE)
if you know what makes it happen you can correct it before it happens.
*stalling the kite manually will help
*fly to the edge of the window on an angle

So,Bonk....You are cool.

You dont hate Gays, but you hate kids !!Right?

Anyway,back to Hindenburging.

Refers to the kite just falling out of the sky.
Dont know about all these complicated reasons, over flying,5th line etc.

Can be from a simple lack of wind.

Yes, I most certainly do. Actually, let me qualify that. I hate noisy, p!ss poorly behaved kids. Oddly enough, they're almost always in the company of equally noisy, p!ss poorly behaved parents who don't seem to give a toss about how fkng annoying it is to have to put up with someone else's noisy, p!ss poorly behaved kids......
