I have a 12 year old (1st year H.S)step son who has indicated he would
like to learn to kite surf. Is he too young to learn or maybe not mature enough to realize how dangerous kiting can be, if instructions aren't followed, and things get out of hand. He will be supervised and have the right gear after he has been taught.
Is there an instructor out there with the enough patients to teach him.
As I am only a intermediate kiter I will not be teaching him until he has the basics taught to him by a quailified person.

Anyone thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated..

Jason (Fulltilt) works out of Rockingham and has a very good reputation. The bay he teaches in is safe and normally excellent conditions. If you need his number, give me a shout but you can find it yourself on his website. Also there are a lot of others depending on where you are prepared to go to be taught.

Dont get me wrong, Just want him to be safe and understand the sport, remember he's has another dad. Once he is on the water he's on his own so he must deal with all situations that arise.
All qualified instructors teach safety, but kids are different to instruct thats why you need patients as a teacher as well as being safe. Just want to get him into the sport without being scared off by an overbearing teacher, I havn't got the patients to teach him. Ask any parent on what its like to teach your own...

heya yeah 12 is an awesome age to start kiting!! wish id started then, yeah check out Toby down at melville hes only 12 and ripping it up already
the boys over at Peli point are pretty good instructors, give em a shout 93861830 or i reckon Dale who is sometimes down at Melville, could be good for ur youngen, youd have 2 give him a call and see his hours tho...let us know if u want his #

Oh you are funny Finn, Apart from Jan i think that went over everyones head.
But back to the Subject at hand. When kiting at Saftey bay one day Last year i saw a kid who was seven years old ripping. It took me a while to get my head around it, the kid had no fear and his father who is the late Mick Eastland was totaly relaxed. Apparently the kid started at six. Mick said that he never set out to teach his son but his son really wanted to learn and was persistant.
Can you imagine the moves this kid will be busting in years to come if he stays with the sport.
