Just wondering what the magic trick is to staying upwind, or even just holding a rail when going upwind in serious chop?

I'm fine in the river, but going out at scabs today I was struggling to stay upwind, and even keeping a rail in was tricky going over the big stuff at times (4ft?).

Seems like really driving the back foot in works a bit, but then I shot too far upwind and lost speed. Trying to balance it out I found I nosedived into the wave (more than once...).

Any suggestions?

Try keeping your kite as far forward in the wind window as you can without stalling, keep your head and shoulders facing the direction you want to get to and focus on a landmark if possible. WHen heading out against chop/swell, absorb with knees and hold an upwind line, when going with the chop/swell, use it to gain speed then let it pass under you while holding an upwind line, don't get lured into staying on it and losing ground down wind.

Just wasn't strong enough when you where out so early today.
In flat water you go faster and that adds relative speed.
In Scarb's swell you loose speed, so you need an extra 2kn or so.

4 foot was it???
What size kite were you on? I was riding a 12 metre out at scarbs around 4pm and was under powered. If you ride in the ocean more often you will learn to read the waves and chop a bit better and ride according but it can be trying if there is alot of short chop. Good luck
