well went out today dow at caloundra, still a learner obviously but i got up for the sorta first time. Was great fun! got up strait away and was heading out toward some shark nets, then when i tried to slow down to turn around i realized i didnt exactly know how! tryed edging hard to slow down and failed just made the kite drop further into the powerzone and i actually double my speed..... so i just turned the kite around and stacked it big time think i got some good air n then dug the front of the board into a wave.. managed to see the kite was soaring toward the water as i was geting dragged backwards though the surf and corrected n kept if flying actually did a loop! by this time i was all good spun my bar back to fix the lines n started the body draggin to try n get back to my board, what a mission. Im so gettin a board leash! After about 6 tacs i managed to get about 2m from my board and then swam to it against the kite sittin at 12o'clock which supprizingly worked so there i was completely exhasted with my board, way way away from the beach i was not about to try and attempt goofy foot, n loose my board again so i just dragged my self back slowly, you know trawling for sharks!

so whats the deal how do you slow to turn? n every time i try goofy foot i suck at it, is it somthing you just need practice with, im alright at it with wake boarding i dunno... just have difficulty starting of goofy..

and should i look at getting a waist harness as i just have a dakine fusion seat one, oh n the kites im usin are a 9m air rush lift, 12m naish v4, and a 15m wipika hydro... they all a little old like 04ish but good for a learer like me :)

so give me some tips and tell me of your first time expiriences n sorry about the novel i just got excited

Struth, it's so long ago I learnt I've forgotten how it happened. To slow and turn as a beginner your best bet is to fly the kite up to 12 while you're riding. Just do it a bit slower next time. It will take you downwind a bit but eventually you'll run out of steam, if you don't seem to be slowing down with it at 12 then send it back 5 minutes or so, that should sort you out.

Goofy foot is something you'll need, trust me. You're right about the practice too, that's what you'll need to get it waxed. Plenty of it.

If you're going to get a board leash get a reel type leash, stretchy leashes are bad juju. If you ride with board leash you should wear a helmet too I've heard.

Have fun dude, you've just taken the red pill. Now you get to see how deep the rabbit whole goes, and like in the movie, there's no going back...

What Greenpath says, to take gently the kite to 12 or a little bit over is the right think to do, also whilst doing this push harder the back foot, like trying to put the board against the kite, but don't forget to lean backwards, otherways you will be comming "face down" in the water. As you slow down, chance the stance as to go the other way and send the kite down the other way. You wil be going towards the other direction in no time.

Good luck, and dont forget keep it safe.

it's all well and good to send the kite gently to 12 when you want to turn around or slow down, but this only works if you have space downwind. if you're overpowered on your C kite and you can't hold the edge, it will pull you off downwind and you will skate on the surface, it will take about 20m of area downwind to slow back down. that's not cool if there's a kiter there, or a beach, or some rocks or something.

i went and changed from my 05 CO2 to a GK sonic yesterday, holy crap the difference is astounding. if you need to slow down a bit, you just sheet the bar out and it happens. no more dangerous crashes downwind, and within 2 hours on the water i was doing toeside carve turns, perfect slide turns and some gentle jumps.

a bow kite will really speed up your learning curve, trust me. you can always go back to the C's when you're a decent kiter.

Crap, I made a grammatic error! Something somewhere has gone terribly wrong for that to happen.

Gday almaster I started kiting back in jan and I found the best way to slow down was like the others said slowly sending the kite back to 12oclock and while keping an edge diging the back foot into the water and pushing against the kite.

riding goofy will just come with practice practice and some more practice but after no time you will find that you can ride both directions with no worys at all.

I allso agree wit p4rix the mystic warrior harness are mad.

Hope my 2 cents worth helps. Have fun

hey,
Thanks for the pointers, I was on one of the open beaches more towards Calaundra, so space wasnt really an issue. and there wernt any other kiters around for me to get tangled up with and annoy!
After readin a bit more about boards, I was thinkin mine probably isnt suited to the chop of the surf. Which probably wasnt helping (slingshot sx141) but il keep trying with it for awhile, might look at getting some straps for my surfboard.

the bow kites sound good for learning, but seeing as there newer models, i cant really afford them at the moment, so i'll just stick with the c kites for now and try and learn fast! :)

Was so annoyed yeasterday at the complete lack of wind! Hoping it will pick up today, looks as tho it will be southerlys so i will get some practice goofy foot strait away!

but if I get out and up, I will let you know how I go with the turns, oh and I got a board leash too, one of thoes retractable ones. So I will be putting that to the test too, hope it doesnt hurt me!!

If you're going to use a leach I would also get a helmet and impact vest too.

i agree, since i got a impact vest and helmet i feel so much more safer kiting in the windier days! Try and get a retractable leash they are soooooooooo much more safer! Good on yah mate! i only gets better, wait until you land your first huge jump.

dont get too comfortable with the board on a leash, always be on the look out for the board when it submerges....they come at you really quickly when they pop out. I had a retractable, and you really have to be careful, don't believe that because it is safer, that it is safe.
good luck out there,

Az.
