As an ex pole boy of 15 yrs, as I was towing in a non progressive type with a broken mast (remember, think about that annoying thing that had to go on top of the car). Couldn't waste a good opportunity ........suggested it was time to change sports. My, what a silent trip in it became. Can anyone suggest any LOGICAL reason why the pole boys stick to their discipline?
Lets start it off:

1. Anally retentive
2. no balls
3. sorry, that's it, just can't understand it!

****ty thread i know, but the wind is looking ****ty this weekend.

Some of them maybe getting a bit old and have a big investment in all their equipment, and convincing the wife they need to change to kiteboarding and spend all that money again
They might just be thinking why bother.

Don't start trying to convince the windsurfing crew to swap to kiting, there're enough strings on the water now!

Who needs crowds?

Some of them just dont feel confident or have tried kiting and feel they get more satisfaction from windsurfing. When your good at something its not that easy to just drop that sport and take up something else similar as you have to go through that whole learning curve again.

I was just thinking about that when I watched a car pull up at Wello yesterday with a fibreglass stick on the roof that was longer than the car. It was an old mazda sporty looking thing that looked like it might have been cool in the 80s, and I thought "just like windsurfing".

Some windsurfers do kitesurfing as a 'light wind' alternative. They use 20m kites in 4knots of puss. For them, it's a novel distraction.

In the end, one of these wind-driven sports has got to go!

Gasman,
Your thread seems to me to be more befitting of a 13 yr. old than a 42 yr. old - if that in fact is correct. I personally dont think that this type of negativity is helpful, and only serves to inflame any distrust or whatever that seems to exist between the two sports - of which I dont really understand! Both are dynamic, exciting sports - and if participants in both go about their chosen sport respectful and mindful of the other, then I dont see any problems. To me its a bit like say a hang-glider pilot slagging off paragliding. Both sports have some similarities, and some disparity - yet why run the other sport down just because its not your cup of tea. To say that there is only room for one is utter nonsense - I predict both will be there long into the future. Gary Mitchell

Its a differrant sport altogether, and dont say "NO BALLS"
If you can do a forward loop over the mast, maybe even a double , thats as ballsy as it can be , havent seen anything in kitesurfing to match.
And I kite now cause it suits perth metro conditions better. Last time Gnarloo..... out came the pole board

No balls???

Is this the reason why all the windsurfers are still out having a good time when its 30+ and theres not a kite to be seen...

Whether its wind surfing or kiteing, both sports involve free renewable wind, dont polute the air, and are both enjoyable.
Even though kiteing you can jump way more higher.

Get some wind up ya!

Yeah jarran, we like to think we are clean green sports but truth is we're not. Ever thought of what happens to all your obsolete equipment? Certainly isn't biodegradable... and also what of the pollution as a consequence of manufacturing the raw materials?

Anyway that aside, wind or kitesurfing does it really matter? Plenty do both and many kitesurfers were once fanatical windsurfers. Rise above it... each to their own.

This could be a big assumption of mine, but I'd venture to say that some of the worst offenders when it comes to ragging windsurfers are ex-windsurfers turned kiters.

These kiters are so stoked in their new-found passion that they have no comprehension of how Windies can continue with their 'dinasaur' sport.

But on the flipside, windsurfers may be the most wary of all people when it comes to switching to kiting(another assumption) because they are totally aware of how powerful the wind really is;
and so they could become a little dubious of kites and their associated danger.

How ironic.

PFFFFFFFFFT the only thing ballsy about kiting is when u get ur nuts slapped when use crash cos you cant land ur ***** little moves, you are hated by surfers, windsurfers and wakeboarders for trying to copy something from each of the sport and the only thing you have going for you is the height you can get but you ruin it with all those **** moves you have created. you will never be able to ride a wave like a surfer or windsurfer so y do u bother, you just make your sport look that much gayer, and with wakeboarding if you landed a double backflip its sick but wen you do it kiting it just looks gay cos any1 could do it u make it look gay. windsurfers that have crossed to kiting have mostly dominated but id love to c some1 who has only ever kited try and go professional in windsurfing

There goes the voice of reason. Just as the thread was becoming civilised by all , Luke stirs it up.
As long as every one is having fun out there, and not affecting anyone else, who has the right to say one sport is better than the other. I do both , and surf, and sail yachts and enjoy all just as much.

As usual when theres no wind theres Lotsa people trying to justisfy what they do by seting up an us against them.

Once again I'll piont out the obvious

No matter what the discipline

"They do it because they enjoy it"

Everything else is bollocks.

Even though I do most water sports (except the ones in those swedish videos), I'd have to say that kiting is up there with jetskiing.
For all the bollocks that kiters talk about sharing the beach, why is it that kiting is the one sport that every non-kiting water or beach user bitches about? Because most kiters havent a 'kin clue, get in the way, and insist on doing gay little moves right on top of other people. last time I was out (kiting) at Penguin island, there 20 kites out in a zone about 75m wide, when there km's of water upwind and downwind. Duuuuh - where should I go?. The last time at coro, a busloads of kite "dudes" turned up, 3 of them jump into the water and took a **** (remeber the new dunnies at coro?), then start shouting about how long it was. Good effort guys, reallly impressed the other beach users.
If somethings easy to learn, you get bored with it quick. unless you're thick, and the average IQ of a kiter is printed on his kite I reckon.

Kitings only reletively young so of coarse the tricks are going to come from other board sports. Example... surfing got moves like 'the slash' from a bodyboarder name Paul Roach who used to surf & began dropkneeing on a bodyboard so he could 'throw the tail more.' Wakeboarding came from surfers & trick skiiers... Anyway what i'm trying to say is that no sport is better than another, just you prefer to do your particular sport more than any other. Influence from other sports is what makes a sport grow & get better.

By the way luke.j windsurfing used to look really gay with their triangle shaped sails and 10ft boards with rudders & was a 'family sport' that anyone could do. Then they started using smaller boards which came from the influence of... ooh let me see Surfing! & guess what Surfers used to hate on windsurfers!
Then a handfull windsurfers learnt to ride the waves & do some tricks & slowly gained some respect for their chosen sport.
Oh & if kiters wanted to ride a wave like a surfer they would paddle onto it & not use their kites.
Sounds to me like you havent tried kiting..... Or maybe you did but got your nuts slapped when you crashed trying a little move?

Hey steveh,
Sounds like you were kooking at Penguin Is. oneday, got spooked by 20 other kiters and were intimidated so much that you immediately dropped the sport.
Don't give up so easily.
The greenhorn stage of the sport can often be the most fun part; it's all new and fresh.

the most intimidating thing about kiting is realising the mentality of a large part of the kite fraternity. Kiting is easy - trying to explain to people you do it and you dont drive an HSV is hard

good one Steve
but have you noticed that on any given day the number on a kite is about twice that on a pole sail?

Thankfully the wind is back on Monday so this awful thread can be put to rest in the bin where it belongs. Appologies to all, but really, why is there so much angst out there. Anyone feeling insecure out there??

Gasman,

This discussion is so passed its use-by date its not funny.

Here is the deal that we all know to be fact.

Kiters like you (not all are like you) are from one breeding pool: FAILED windsurfers.

Guys who can actually wavesail and tried kiting out of curiosity, have come back to wavesailing in droves laughing at how boring an uncomparable kiting is.

The guys who bag windsurfing are the ones that were so **** at it that they have to hide their lack of manhood underneath gay baggy pants or boardies over their wetties, and dangle on the end of some kids toy.

The exception to the rule (ie. kiters who aren't total dickwads), are the ones who get on with their favourite sport of choice and not waste their time starting gay threads like this to disguise their own inadequacies.

One sport involces real bottom turns, real lip smacking, real loops. The other is kiting.
But they are 2 different sports so why compare them?

Windsurfers know this. kiters know this. The ones that put up ****ty arguements like this are just tools like you who are **** at both sports.

Enjoy both sports everyone, and hope that gasman does not join you.
Windsurfing will flourish without him.

Hey nutbag, This is 2005.

Kiters are doing real bottom turns on waves(both frontside and backhand),try that on a windsurfer.
Kiters are smacking lips, getting air and then throwing into rotationals just for good measure.
Kiters are doing real loops 30feet up; and at the same time sending the kite into a powerloop for an extra thrill.
And I've left the best till last, Kiters are getting barrelled out of their brains.

You're right, the two sports don't compare.

Kiting is so much more dynamic.

i have dont all the sports mentioned in this thread, and are about to get serious with this kiting. i think they each have their own appeal, and followers alike. i wont diss any of them as i am average at them all, so no argument from my neck of the woods.

anyone who baggs other sports, in a serious manner, needs to relax!

WHAT IS THE ****ING DEAL!?

Half of you guys bagging windsurfing have never tried it.
Half of you guys bagging kitesurfing have never tried it.

Why ask one or the other why they are still kiting or windsurfing 'caus the other is so much better. You know the bloody answer. They still doing it because its fun! Why else do you do it.

Someone give me a reason why we all can't just drop the attitude and get out there and share the water and be mates. I know there a dicks out there in both sports, but you get that in everything, and thats not a reason to bag the sport as a whole.

All you kiters out there remember how many times a kiter has got in your way.
All you windsurfers out there remember how many times a windsurfer has got in your way.

Share the stoke, Thats what we do it for in the first place!

Sounds like we all need a good session.
