that does the course entail?
ie : does it include first aid and powerboating licences? or do you have to have them before you do the course?

G'day Bigmark100

Normally or ideally you need to have both of those sorted before you do the course.
At this course the instructors partner will be running a CPR, first aid course that satisfies the IKO requirements, that course will be held during the ITC, in the evenings.

It is a requirement to have a "boat license" or its equivalent to be issue with your Level 1 IKO Instructor certificate. So that means you can do the ITC, and then get a boat license shortly afterwards.

Only 2 places left on the course, as of yesterday.

Steve,

Is there an extra cost to do the evening first aid course if you are already doing the instructors course. How many hours each night will it be. Does it supply you with a first aid certificate/qualification on completion.

Cheers

Hi Aaron,

I think Tina charges $30 or $35 AUD and yes it comes with a certificate. It will be held on one night of the course and will run for a few hours. The cost covers hire of "Annie" the Resus Manequins and the cost of the certificate from the heart Foundation.

I Hope to see you there.

just a quick question boys.

how many people have failed the instructors courses over the years?

yachting and the like have a failure rate because of lack of knowledge or skill on behalf of the participants. they then have to study and practice for another year before they can sit again.

i don't know of any gumby who has failed an I.K.O. course in australia after he has paid his hungees.

am i wrong?

Hi greenleader,

Yep, you are very wrong. Just how many blokes do you think are going to go running around telling all their mates that they failed an instructor course????

There have probably been about a dozen in the 4 years I have been doing the job, remember that half the courses I conduct are overseas not just in Australia.

Those that have failed have gone on to make up their deficiencies and have eventually gained their accreditation.

I know you are a worldly man 'n' all, but just because you haven't personally known of someone doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Good winds,

kitehard,

the blunt question i guess stems from the fact that i seem to be getting an endless stream of instructors coming to the gold coast seeking to make a living. some of them have dubious skills/knowledge/ethics but possibly their qualifications are from overseas. so my question was not personally attacking your qualified self. but i do wonder if we are possibly starting to get an oversupply of instructors who maybe think there is bucketloads of work awaiting them.

regards ian.

Hi Greenleader,

There are a lot of instructors around and I too get heaps of applicants to work in my school, mainly from Europe, but I prefer to employ local talent. I will usually only employ an instructor I have trained.

I also take the time to express exactly what I want from my instructors and work along side of them to demonstrate, how I want them to teach, what to teach, how to treat customers, behaviour I will and wont put up with etc, this way I get the right people for the job. It's very hard to get the right instructors straight off the bat and I believe you get out of your instructors what you are prepared to put in.

It is also part of the business culture I cultivate in my school, we pride ourselves on making sure the client has the best possible experience with the best possible gear from the best trained instructors. Being an IKO Examiner our school is an example of how a great school operates. All of this is impossible with the wrong instructors or instructors who are left with no guidance.

If an instructor comes into a school and everything is half arsed, kites are old and battered, everything looks worn and there is no clear structure to the business, what message does this send to the instructor without guidance? How will he operate? Will it be from a state of excellence or half arsed?

So you see, their qualification is only the first step, their training should be ongoing. To secure the good guys, you have to pay them very well and treat them very well too so they come back next year. I have the same guys again this year because they are very good and a credit to my business.

I know of a few schools who have issues with instructors every year and the reason is they just give em the nod, throw them the keys to the van and say "go teach", then wonder why there are complaints from customers and the instructors leave or are fired. It's all of the above that gives you a good instructor.

There are a lot of good instructors around, you just need to work with them a bit to help them to shine.

Hope you have a great season.
