Hi, All,

Firstly, if this is in the wrong section, I apologise up front. It's yet another "what kite" question. The reason I'm asking what kite is that when I last kiteboarded it was 2005 and I was on a 9m. I've looked around and there are so many different kites that I am well and truly confused.

I have spoken to a couple of stores and they have been relatively helpful so I'm throwing it out to the kiteboarding community.

My last kite was 9m ?? (memory is vague) and also had a high aspect Slingshot 13m Fuel. The fuel was a pig to fly and I rarely took it out (I still have it in pristine condition). The 9m helped with a major injury, hence why I have been off the water all this time. Partly to recover but mostly because it scared the heck out of me. They were both 4line kites.

I was quoted $800 for a 2008 Slingshot Link in great condition (what the store tells me) which has only ever been in the air and is not damaged. I liked the QR but the bridle really threw me (on a 4line?? Really??? Why?). I am intermediate and not really interested in huge air or lots of wave surfing. I really like just tracking upwind with an occasional jump or two every now and then.

I have a tight budget (no more than $800!!) and don't want to advance to another kite anytime soon. I'd like to keep it for at least 2 years before thinking of upgrading (if at all).

I'd love some help with this. I don't want to make the mistake i made with the 13m. Any helpful insight would be very welcome. Thanks, y'all.

Let me guess, you told the store that your budget is 800, and they happened to have a Link for just that price.
As you probably know yourself (troll), the Link is widely considered as a "special" kite..
I would be keen to have a spin with that infamous bugger myself, just for the heck of it.

Why the heck am I being called a troll? And yes, after a little look around and talking with a couple of other people, the Link does seem to be a bit "iffy".

If you are genuinely not a troll, sorry bout that..
But there have been similar posts about the Link and the Hellfish (you might wanna ask your shop about that one!), which were usually not meant that serious.
And 800 bucks kite-only wouldn't be great anyway for a 2008 model.

I'm not trolling! I'm after some advice is all. If you re-read my post you'll see I've been out of the game for some time. I'm simply lost in a sea of kites and would like direction as to what would help me get back on the water. Where should I post so I don't get abused and can actually get some help???

immposible question like "whats the perfect woman"?

you have to try them mate, time consuming, fun, confusing but its the only way

usual things will narrow it down location, size, weight, hair colour, breast size

So if you like to track upwind and are not into unhooking, a c-kite won't be good.
Looks like you want an easygoing, allround freeriding bow..
And basically every company has a model like that.
From my experience, Ocean Rodeo Rise is great. Nemesis HP as well, especially if "upwind" is your thing. Only side effect, your occasional jump might end up being a huge one!

Thank you for the help. I'm in WA and am looking at stores south of the river (to save travelling). West Oz Kiteboarding is the closest to me. I'm not exactly sure what they stock but it can't hurt to call or drop in and have a look. KnutH, you've given me some ideas......

west oz is a great group to work with, they stock Flexifoil, Liquid Force, Airush, Ocean Rodeo, Blade and pretty sure Best as well

My personal opinion of what you are chasing would be something like the Airush Varial or airush Lithium, both of which are SLE kites with lots of depower and has great performance to boot for intermediate level riders who like carving it up and trying to learn a few jumps. That or the Ocean Rodeo Rise as mentioned above is also a good kite to have a bit of fun with.

But I'd opt more for the varial as it has really good stability even in gusty stuff and has great float and hangtime in the jumps.

Or the lithium if you want more low end torque and turning speed, it doesnt quite have the same floatyness and hangtime in the jumps and is fractionally less stable but both are great kites.

mate for that sort of money it will be a few years old and a lot of kites will have leaky valves.
I would go a switchblade 10m (try and get at least a SB3)
The sweet size for one of the most popular kites on the planet, and they don't have/ get peeling valves/bladder leaks like so many other kites

Actually give jason from west oz a call, and take his advice. I have known jason for 10 years, kited with him up in exmouth when kiters were rarely there - except the 3 locals, he knows his stuff, is an excellent rider and will set you right.

Don't go anything before 2009. I was kiting back then (and even 4 years before them) - and you won't even recognise the kiting technology. That is why it took is a whole season to learn and crew are going upwind in a couple of weeks or even less now! (If they get proper lessons).

Fear not Jambi, you'd have to be a complete tosser if you injured yourself with the latest easy to fly kites, and if you do, well that just natural selection.

Sounds like good advice! Good size for 1 kite quiver and easy to fly etc. I bought my dad a 2010 SB 12m for $1000 back in December (with 1 repair, and we haven't had an issue with it). I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a 10m in good condition now for somewhere between $800 and $1000.

The switch is a sound kite. Stable, good smooth power delivery - enjoyed a couple of rides on a 10m.

But again talk to jason / also someone like darren at AKS (he has a wealth of knowledge) about the 'type' of kite that would suite you best. Don't run out and buy a certain brand and model because others recommend it. He has a range of different brands that suite different needs. Also try before you buy, demo, absolutley!

Again the switch may serve your purpose, but get some more feedback of someone/s who has more experience than most and has ridden more kites than most.

There are so many kite brands and models to chose from now.The kites now are much easier and safer to fly than what you felt with the Fuel 13.Demo as many as you can, different brands, and be very wary of Pimpers, this website is full of them.A basis of what to pay for a used kite that is in excellent condition IMO is
1 year old 5/8 of the price it was new
2 year old 1/2 of the price it was new
3 year old 3/8 of the price it was new
4 year old 1/4 of the price it was new
5 year old 1/8 of the price it was new
6 year old Worthless

Nice one. Can you put it into a graph like craggers did for kiters comments on a forum?
