it will cost you about 500-1000 for a good second hand kite and about 500 for a good second hand board. and then a harness would be about $200

The $ cost is any ones guess. I've been kiteing for a few years now and have spent a few $$ my self. I'd advise talking to your local kite store, getting some lessons and then getting gear to suit. I've seen too many people launcing the latest greatest kit only to be hammered down the beach with bark off, kites in trees etc, etc..

Just my 2 cents worth

Ben, the initial cost is about $100.00 per hour for a beginner. Take some lessons, using the teachers gear, and you will save yourself a fortune and possibly a neck. After a few lessons, about the time you'll be up on a board, you can ask your question again... if you're still wanting to... this is the path to savings. Of untold fortune.

you may also want to factor in the cost of your lost social life, and the collapse of any non-kiting relationships as well as your job suffering as soon as it gets windy...

Hi Guys,

We see hundreds of people getting into the sport each year and it's always the same. It's hard justifying the few hundred for lessons, then they scratch around a buy an old second hand kite for a couple of hundred and you hear all the stories about how they dont want to spend much money.

Then, you meet them on the beach a year later with a quiver of three latest kites and two boards, they've changed careers to facilitate more time on the water, have changed cars to fit all the equipment in, and have dumped their girlfriend because they were put on the spot with the "It's either kiting or me" line..... and their still kiting!

They seem pretty happy and it gives me a good laugh too

Honestly, don't buy gear more than 2 years old at the oldest, preferably buy gear to suit your level, or rent beginner gear from us, do your practice and then buy further up the performance chain with knowledge at skill.

Good second hand beginner gear is like gold and it rarely hits the forum 4 sale pages, it sells long before then.

Have a great summer peeps, the wind is in already!

lessons/kite and bar/board/harness ~$2000 2ndhand gear ~$3000 new gear

A lot of us look back now and think what we would have done differently in gear selection and wasted time effort and money on stuff. If I knew what I knew now and was just starting I would do the following:

2006 Waroo 12m (or 9m if I was under 70kg) with bar
2nd hand 130-136 cardboard, 132-140 flx or similar board.
nitrous seat harness
lessons from someone with above gear and to the stage I was competent in kiting in both directions, upwind and relaunching. Could be 2hrs could be 6hrs.
This is just me, the next guy could be totally different!!!

New Second
Lessons 3 x 90min = 3 x $130 = $390
Kite $1500-2200 $600-1000
Board $800-1200 $300-600
Harness $150-250
Helmet $70-100
Impact Vest $150-250

I would recomend the helmet and impact vest but many people go without, everything else is required.

Keep your eyes peeled on ebay and the buy/sell forums here, I picked up a good second hand 12M North for $1200 plus $200 for a 5th Element Bar, The guy threw in the harnes and pump etc, so you can be lucky,, I would get lessons first though, and ideally start with a friend as you can egg each other on, something I found really helpful at the start.

i reckon a good and decent set up these days haha, would cost you $1500-$1800 for a board and kite (make sure kite inc. pump and lines tho!) And your harness. There is a greay second hand market so check that out ay, make sure you know wat you are looking for, otherwise take a friend who knows about kites etc. Test them out before you buy and then you will know wat flies best for you

Best of luck, best to kiting too

the good thing about kitesurfing at the moment is that there are kits available at your local kitesurf shop from $250 to $2500 in $50 increments.
well it's like that on the gold coast anyway!

cost me $1800m to get started and i'm 78kg.

$1000 - slingshot fuel 11m
$400 - slingshot sx 122
$200 - dakine harness
$100 - 1 1/2 hr lesson

most kite places do a deal where if you have some lessons and then buy gear the lesson cost comes off the gear. Also as Kat said make sure u get lines/pump/bar with ur kite and a lesson before you buy anything!
