I think it would be instructive to get people's personal list of injuries sigificant enough to cost time off the water. Mention:
years kiting
injury
causative factor

If you're experienced and never had an injury, wipe the smile off your face and let us know, so we can get a balanced view.

So.......
5 years
stitches to elbow (board leash!!)
rotator cuff tear (dicking around too close to the beach)
broken rib (new kite with extra hang time .......1 1/2 foreward)

is this to scare any potential kiter who reads these forums to think twice and stop any more beaches becoming too crowded....
ok
lets see

-time kiting- 11 months
-spiral fracture to left ankle, unhooked railey and coming in to land when a footstrap came off.
all the other sprains, bruises, dislocations, hangovers, windings etc havent really resulted in any time off the water save for 20 minutes for nurofen to take effect.

DISLOCATED FIBULA BONE, LANDING IN THE SHALLOWS OF PELI POINT, BOARD STICKIN TO MUD N BODY KEEPS ROTATING, OUT POPS THE BONE FROM BACK OF KNEE.
BEEN KITIN BOUT 1-1.5 SEASONS
COST ME BOUT 2.5 MONTHS THEN SLOWLY BACK INTO KITING.
MY FOOT STILL HURTS AT TIMES FROM THE TORN LIGAMENTS AS IT WAS STUCK IN THE FOOTSTRAP.
BUT HEY, THATS WHAT EXTREME SPORTS ARE ABOUT.
IT RATHER EAT SH@T ON THE WATER THAN HITTIN THE DIRT AFTER JUMPIN ON A MOTORBIKE OR HITTIN THE PAVEMENT FROM SKATIN.

Been kiting 3 years.
Broken rib cartilage, out of water 1 month (still hurts 1 year later).
8 stiches to foot landing on a cow feeding trough in a lake, out of water for 1 month.

I can see a strong bias happening here - people that have been injured are most likely to put a post.
So just to balance a bit.

Kiting time 2 years and a half (including winter time)
Injuries: none; not even a scratch.
No board leash, no helmet. A lot of luck.

Cheers

This is my forth year...

never done any damage untill the pre-season this year...

So far I have spent the last 7 weeks in pain with a folded knee (hyperflexion) landing an S-bend, constantly clicks when walking. Broken rib cartilage landing a multiple spiny thingy right off the beach at Woddies three weeks ago and put the bar in my chest, its frustrating as I can go to work, just can't kite...

If you've never dropped your kite, your not trying hard enough !
To hear your knee go POP ruins a kite trip !
Sucide leash's and onshore conditions are a interesting combination !

been kiting 3 years... smashed into a 15 foot retaining wall at the point in applecross after a 40+ kt gust on a 15 metre kite.. my "custom made" wake board of 3" thick , combined with 2" of rubber on my bindings, and landing horizontally on the wall ... saved me of all injuries.... havn't had any close encounters since.. rode over a 6 foot hammerhead that was less than a foot from the surface... didn't bight me though

9 months kiting
1. twisted ankle when one foot came out, board rotated, other foot stayed in and rotated with it. Not the first time that ankle has been twisted, already a writeoff. (inexperience - all kooky on the board)
2. multiple lacerations on feet from shell/rocks/trash at Pallarenda (tightfistedness, too cheap to buy bootees)
3. patch of numb skin on left leg after impacting into sand on beach off a mountainboard mucking around in light wind. Expect feeling to return around Christmas 05. The nerve receptors themselves are dead and need to regrow. (recklessness - 17m kite on land with mountainboard set up for 50kg teenager, and me at 110. Wind was picking up too, about 12kts)
4. aggravated old shoulder injury when dragged onto the beach and put my elbow out to stop myself. I hit the hard sand and took most of the blow in my shoulder socket. It still hurts, but that was only icing on the cake after years of rugby and snowboarding trauma so I can't blame kiteboarding. (overpowered, new kite that flew differently to what I was used to)
5. soft tissue damage to groin inside pelvis when dragged over fin of my own board. 24 hours in hospital in intense pain, 14 days off the water, ongoing problems in genital area, subsequent problems with sex life. (still under the influence of alcohol the morning after a big drinking session - quite a lesson learned on that one)

coming up for 2 years. only real injury showing off too near the beach at madfish bay at denmark, mistiming the transition (and an unexpected gust) and getting lofted too high and twisting and landing on rocks rather than water. fractured vertibrae and ended in hospital for a short while but wasn't as bad as it sounds. long term injury only to pride i guess. others who've posted some time ago had some pretty serious bumps.

this thread is interesting, and not that there's anything bad about pissing in our own pockets about injuries cos that's fun, but since wa is one of the kiting capitals of the world (in conditions and talent if not numbers. yet....) is there some benefit in someone keeping all this gear somewhere? it may be worth it for instructors, shop owners, or whatever. just a thought.

This is my third? maybe forth year.

Second season in and I hyper-extended all the tendons and ligaments across the mid-foot. Caught a front edge when landing a low fast-ish jump. Was out of action for 3 months and took about 12 months before it was 100% Doctors said I would have been better off breaking my foot, as it wouldve healed twice as quick.

Along with the usual bruising, body slam, wave crunch, seeing stars every now and then, board bash and bruise, knee tweek, ankle strain etc etc etc......

Its all good though - cant wait to get out tomorrow for another session!

Been kiting 2.5 years and had 1 year off the water.
Came off in shallows at PP and had a spiral fractur of the left fibula, this required surgery and about 6 months off.

By far my worst injury happened riding a road bike earlier this year, when I fractured my right hip ( neck of femur), believe it or not this is not an uncommon cycling injury. So far I have not been back out on the water.

Accidents can happen in any sport, my personal belief is that one needs to exercise extreme caution, that way if you are unlucky it won't be your own stupidity.

3 years of kiting and only a few bruises. But i am an over cautious kiter and as a result my quiver of fancy moves is developing slower than other kiters of the same experience. The young and the foolhardy can progress very fast in this sport.

Have been kiting for 2 years...
First injury last week requiring only 1 week off. Did something to left ankle (too stuborn or stupid to go to doctor but seems to be improving)... Just taken up yoga and I believe it may help reduce risk of injury!
Jump off water onto beach when finished session. Done it plenty of times, just got over keen and went a little high and came down hard... lucky not to break anything?
Have been winded 3 times pretty badly but just knocks the confidence momentarily (sure plenty of us have been there).

18 months kiting at Peli, Cott and Cocos.

Two incidents/injuries.

1. Classic and common newbie accident. Left foot twisted when right foot came out of straps during a jump. Now I always dump the board if anything looks suspect on the way down. If one foot comes out - get the other one out quick. Off the water 3 weeks - could have been a lot worse.

2. Classic and common newbie accident (near miss). Hit hard on the helmet by a board attached to me by a long surf board leash. No injury - just a shock. It was when I was trying some early jumps and the board stayed underwater - I was lifted by the kite - which then put enormous tension on the surf board leash - then the board let go of the water and fired itself straight at my head. Now in waves I use a reel leash and I've had no problems.

Like Bolgo I've recently switched my lines (one side only front and back). Resulting in use of the QR for real. No injuries.

I also fly light aircraft and the stats show higher rates of incidents in the first 50 hrs flying time, then a drop as people get experienced followed by a steep rise at 200 hrs as people get over confident/complacent.

NOt that I'm saying that I'll never get an injury from kitesurfing but I have been kiting for about 4 years now and have not had one single injury.

I guess the reason for this is because I never go hard. I have a 12 metre kite and never go out in more than 20 knot winds. Also I only go out when there is a seabreeze and never on a day when a storm front is coming along.

It would be my guess the the only reason most of you get injuries is because you constantly push yourself to the limits.

Yeah I know I might sound like a bit of a geek to most of you.

Take care

3 years experience
no serious damage
came close when a board hit my head (with helmet) I stopped using board leashes and helmets form then...much safer!

A couple of weeks ago flying kite on land in gusty conditions when a line got caught around an attachment point and aimed the kite to the power zone. Thank christ for the safety release! only damage being grazes to legs from the 20 or so metres I got dragged in the milisecond it took to pull the safety release. Flying kites on land is just stupid. And I was demonstrating the new sandgroper kite to an instructor (in VIC) who helped launch when this happened ... just shows this can happen to anyone.

No, i am not going to BITE at this scandalous comment!!.

I will just clear up a few things.
The fact that i am over cautious does not mean that i dont go hard. I am often Kiting by myself once the wind gets to 25 knots, and love nothing better than a 30 knot day, Winter and Summer. I am just taking my time with kiteloops, Rotations, jump Transition and the like.
By the time Hung Long is back on the water i am pretty sure i will be leaving his aching twisted body in my wake.
As i said im not going to bite!!

Enjoyed reading the various injury stories. Here's a windsurfing injury. Hope yah don't mind? 23/12/89 a day I will never forget!! Compound fracture of Tib & Fib. Five months on crutches, 2 months in hospital, 5 operations & 8 months till I sailed again. Two years to 70% recovery. Will never get any better.

Another Windsurfer hit me in the left leg which resulted in 12 stitches. That was the least of my worries as my right leg had snapped in half & my shin bone was poking out 3 inches. The hole in my leg was bigger than a golf ball. His board had an inch missing of the front of it and the deck peeled open from the direct impact. I spent a week in hospital just waiting for surgens to decide if they would amputate. The guy who hit me never sailed again.

A simple accident. We just didn't see each other.

Just look out for the old fella with a bit of a limp,a bad scare on his leg and a smile on his face as I enjoy ever day I get to sail.

Lets all be careful out there.

And just to show I can still charge.

Okay maybe I was a little to harsh in saying that the only reason why MOST people get injuries is because they push themselves to the limits. I worries me now for saying that because it would be just my luck to go out, follow all the right safety checks only to receive some sort of serious injury anyhow - man that would suck!

Perhaps for this survey what the real question should be is how many of you were injured but knew they could have prevented it if they took a few extra precautions that they ignored at the time. How many of you knew at the time you were taking a big risk before the injury happened? Why do this survey unless we have enough information to learn from it? How about everyone that has already posted on this topic also tell us if they think they could have prevented it at the time - I think that would be a little more interesting.

Having said that I met some guy on the beach at Woodies about a year ago (he owns a 13 metre strongkite) and he told me that when you go out kitesurfing it is ALWAYS an assessed risk.

Sorry if I offended anybody in my last post. But now I'm just curious to see what people are thinking.

Take Care

Marty

Kiting approx 3 1/2 years

Bad Bad elbows (tennis elbow)extremely painfull and when they are really angry wake you in the early hours of the morning with extreme pain, out on three occasions out twice for a week once for two - seems to be burning itself out this season but is a constant niggle.

Bad ankle - old injury revisted I believe from using a twin tip in the early days that was 175cm - too long, very stiff & heavy and crap bindings/straps, some ligement damge and constant bruising to the bone with blood pooling and bone chips/fragments for a stabing good time

had my fare share of "wake up" calls to!
