Last week i was down at lucky bay watching 2 people learning with what seemed to be an instructor. It was thursday I believe and it wasn't a seabreeze, seemed like a cold front. What concerns me is a few things that the instructor or teacher was doing.
1.He was launching hooked in with kite on the beach. The tide was way out and the kite should have been launched from the other side. Common sense!!!
2.He had the kite overhead while about 5m off the beach. Common sense
3.He started to showoff to the student doing jumps when 5m off the beach. Flying the kite quite a bit overhead to get lift. Beyond common sense
4.He then gave the kite to the student to body drag with 30m off the beach. New kiter with large traction kite only 50m from houses- Risk assesment.
These actions are dangerous in even the most stable and constant winds. Lucky bay is extremely gusty at the best of times, this coupled with the fact that the wind was frontal made me very worried and concerned. If people are going to be taught wrong and dangerous practices then what is the point of lessons?

Hey buddy,
were you involved with the lesson? Were you listening to the instructor? Or just watching from a distance and criticising him with your mates, scheming about how you could devalue the instructor and lessons on the internet?
you are probably a good kiter, as most kiters in WA are good..
you don't need to tell us about what you think of someone else - you need to talk to the guy that did the lesson and ask him what he was doing?
What can anyone else do about it '000km's away?? Talk to WAKSA, your local retailer or IKO if he is registered.
People kite at Lucky Bay in all different conditions, i'd bet - why shouldn't beginners be shown and taught in real conditions.
Maybe the instructor was saying - don't ever do this! when he was jumping on the beach.
who knows, neither of us...

tim that is true... he could have been watching a what not to do with your kite
however a few years ago when i started out i was first taught by friends and got to the point where i had good control of the kite and board but wanted some lessons to improve myself
it IS possible to find some dodgy instructors out there as i got one!
i was horrified at what he was doing and felt like a complete idiot being taught by him.
it was my one and only lesson with him and since found another guy who knew exactly what he was doing
when i first started out i was probably the only idiot in perth going out in all sorts of weather but there is only one way to learn!
and i learnt my lesson lol trust me
