Hi, a former local instructor said he was a qualified instructor but i checked the IKO site that lists all aussie instructors and he's not there? Is the another accredited organisation or have I been scammed?

Hi Kitewrong,

IKO is the only recognised training accreditation in Australia and the only internationally recognised system. If the instructors name does not appear on the database, then they are not currently registered and are therefor no longer part of IKO. This is usually due to not paying their yearly fees, or have not bothered to follow the rules and have subsequently been stricken off the database.

Pretty common for instructors to give the IKO the finger and then complain about being removed from the register. I hope they dont go having an accident as they wont have a leg to stand on in court.

Hope this helps,

The question was for a qualified instructor. In terms of ability he might be qualified, if hes insured then theres nothing wrong with that,

A question for Kitehard

What exactly is covered by the IKO instructor's insurance?
I was told it was only professional liability (not public liability)and covered an instructor working for an already fully insured school. It doesn't cover one man operations working from beach to beach?

Hey Dave,

A good question mate. Never having taken out that insurance myself (AKS is privately insured in Australia) I never looked into it until now. The policy covers instructors as private riders (Public Liability and damage) and also for Professional Indemnity for wrongful instruction or professional mistakes.

Here is the wording from an exert from the website :

Information regarding Personal Liability Insurance for IKO instructors

Sum insured: EUR 2,000,000 for bodily injury
EUR 1,000,000 for property damage
per occurrence, subject to an aggregate limit in the double amount for all occurrences per year.

PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY:

Insurance coverage: Professional liability for self-employed IKO kiteboarding instructors and / or IKO snowkiting instructors.
Personal legal liability under civil law (under private law) as an instructor of kiteboarding, to cover teaching activity.

The IKO instructor is covered for claims from students under his supervision, e.g. for violation of the obligatory supervision, wrong instructions and commands and similar.

This general liability insurance does not cover the liability of an individual school. Thus, for example, there is no insurance cover if an instructor has his or her own school grounds/beach, employee/assistant, school equipment (kiteboards and kites), boats or similar. For this a school general liability policy is required.

If the IKO instructor is insured by the school/kite centre/club, or is covered by another insurance policy at the same time, the other insurance policy takes precedence over this group insurance for IKO instructors (subsidiary insurance coverage).

Third-party liability insurance for private kiteboarding and / or snowkiting (only in the disciplines you are qualified as an instructor in):
General liability of the insurant instructor through the ownership, possession and use of private used kite boards and kites.

Hope this helps!

I believe the list at the IKO website -

http://www.ikointl.com/iko_instructors_list.php

lists all current instructors, whether they are rated good or bad. If they are not on the list, then they are not current with their licence and have been struck off the list. They wont be able to issue IKO cards nor obtain IKO Instructors' insurance, not legit ones anyway. If he issued you with an IKO card, it should have his Instructor's ID on it. If you have any concerns, just write to IKO to seek clarification.

Thanks for feedback. I checked the leaflet i was given and it actually doesnt say IKO or any other org. I just assumed IKO as its the only one I have seen on the web. Lesson learnt.
