I've been wanting to get small kite for a while now but the missus won't let me spend too much. I flew a mates 8m Nemesis on my Slingy '05 bar and lines (45cm) and thought it went unreal. So now I want one but not sure whether to get it direct from Best in Florida or from Kitepower (their price is AUS$599). Given the price (direct from Best) on the nemesis 8 is only 369 (guess US dollars), maybe I won't have to pay gst/duty. Anyone have any experiences they can tell me about? what's the freight likely to be (to melbourne). Thanks.

frieght probably less than $80, AUS, 1- 2 weeks weight.
If you include an invoice on or in the package expect customs may open the package and charge you import duty....on whatever the invoiced price is ... so I wouldn't put one in there and would ask whoever you buy off not to put one in there.... dunoo what import duty is (20% or something...) and dunno what the min price your supposed to pay import duty on is ( duty free is $800) but dunno if that has anything to do with getting something sent to you from over seas

If you work out your exchange rate, add 15% duty and handling plus around $50 for clearing then the dollars are nearly the same! However you break it down the pricing is gonna be close.

How about keeping your kite dollars in OZ and supporting a retailer who gives something back to the kiting community ? I think its a no brainer if you think a little more about the big picture.

And it helps keep dollars in oz so we can develop an even better cricket team / build a new road somewhere / give a politician a pay rise / give a tax break to businesses with new ideas for an amazing product to export to the rest of the world/ etc etc

And you may be able to get your kite straight away so you are on the water straight away.

US$369=AUS$485 @.76 exchange rate
import duty=$60.62 (17.5% approx. You will have to pay for this)
customs clearance fee=$35 approx
freight=$80(estimate)Freight from the east coast is way more expensive than from the west coast of USA. Its all calculated on distance from start to end destination.

total cost to you (AUS)=$660.62

This is an approximate but most probably more of a pain in the ass than worth while. Try negotiating a better cash price with a retailer here usually you can get at least 10% discount for cash.

Importing can be a real pain. It's worth the hassle on buying bulk You can get lucky and get thru customs without paying but highly unlikely. You will only really save a few bucks.

I import products from all round the world and i have a customs broker to take care of all the clearance and freight forwarding. They have been in the game for ages and clear stuff really quickly.

All the best hope this helps. cheers UBER

and don't forget if you put it on Visa or other credit card they normally charge you 1/2 to 1% exchange rate. some are 1.5% on the exchange amount. Put that in the equation and its a lot cheaper from kitepower.

slightly off topic but still regarding importing kites. I'm coming back from europe in October and want to bring back several kites and boards that I have bought over here. Whats the best (and cheapest) way of doing this. By cheapest I mean avoiding customs fees. The kites are used, but are less than 12 months old.

@ robecq- I think that for you it will be no problem as your kites are not new and are not for resale purposes. For your personal sports equipment being carried with you I think there is no problem/tax/duties.

I lug lots of gear all around the world and have never had a problem.
