G'day i was just wondering whether any one could help out my budget. Im looking to make my own board however i was wondering whether there is a cheaper solution to divinycell and a lighter solution then plywood? i was wondering whether i could use polystyrene or styrofoam (unsure of the spelling) as i have large amount of this that needs to be thrown out, reinforced with some ply and epoxy. Will it be strong enough? Thank you

a piece of diviycell needed for a kiteboard will probably only cost about $30.00 not a large cost in the overall cost of a board when you consider the cost of acessories such as fins and footpads not to mention if you are considering using prepreg carbon construction . in my opinion it is not worth trying to skimp on the core but i would certainly look for some cheap fins as glass fins are selling for about $45.00 each i got some injection molded fins for $12.00 each . they don't look as flash but they seem to work ok

another brand is klegecell.it comes in the same densities and is cheaper.(only slightly)problem with most of the companies is that they won`t cut from a sheet.generally you will have to buy a whole sheet.i know guys who have made boards from polystyrene,it is a cheap option but you will be relying alot more on your skin strength.(more glass)and i think you probably won`t be able to get away with as thin a board as you would with pvc foams.Ply would definately strengthen it up,but also add a fair bit of weight.I hav`t really had a lot to do with it,there must be a lot of guys that have tried though.

Karl.

if you only need enough divnycell to build one board try a boatbuilder i bought a half sheet of klegecell off one for sixty dollars which is enough to make two boards
