I had the best kiting sesh last Sunday at wello on a 12m m80, and wlf with bindings A straight 3.5 hours kiting and an absolutely perfect day! 17-23 knots [}:)]...

I had my first jellyfish sting then also lol... I didn't know what it was at first- It stung a fair bit, but I just contined on kiting for about 1 hour when I changed to the wlf, and noticed a red, raised area where it was stining and itching a bit (about 4 or so centimetres in diameter). I just left it and kept on kiting because it stopped itching and wasn't sore at all... It started to look like a bruise which was red and raised also, however, now six days later it's starting to get a little itchy; is still the same size, but it has small, red, raised lumps in the same spot... Apart from applying aloe vera gel to it to stop it from itching, is it normal for this to be itchy six days after this occoured, and to still be red and raised bumps>? If it was concerning me I would contact a doctor, but as it isn't severe, I have not done so.

Just concerned and wonering if this is common after a jellyfish sting, if that's what it was, and also what should be applied to the area if a severe sting has occoured? (for future reference).

Many Thanks guys

ps. sorry if this topic has already been addressed, however I did a forum search, and wasn't able to find anything on it.

liz, did a big blue blubber brush up against you or was it another type of jelly?
was it on the inside arm/leg area?

Happy you got some wind girl

You got to be careful out there, especially when bit by something. Often you don't know how the bite will effect you till later. Can certainly understand you staying out there though.

I feel that you may not know how your body reacts to certain things. I found recently that I am "allergic" to the bees here in Australia; and, certain things that I step on in the ocean or river have "effects" on me also.

I don't know what stung you, but next time get in and see what symptoms are developing...while on land with others.

Hope you get more wind and the rash leaves.

My experience with 25 years sailboarding and kiting in Moreton bay and listed in order of pain

Moreton Bay Blue (common)
Hurts a little and leaves a red rash with bad stings leaving welts, not really bad enough to take you off the water and takes a lot of stings before you consider quiting. Wearing long pants doesn't help because the stings and lice that hang around them are sometimes in the water and get traped in loose fitting clothing.

Blue Bottle (air sack on top)
Nasty little things that do give a sharp pain and are hard to see. You don't need to be in the water to get stung as they flick up off the rail spray and get ya. I can handle a handfull of hits before I'm off the water not through pain even though it hurts but more through my glands next to my nuts telling me their upset. Pain goes away in a few hours and your back out.

Snotties/lions maine (the big brown things)
I have landed in one of these things and all the tenticals came up over my body which did not tickle one bit. These mothers are really just like one big Blue Bottle and give the sensation of fire in their pain. Once hit your on the beach checking out the red lashes and cursing the thing. The sting marks last for a few days so do show them off to family and friends to gain so hard core beach credability.
Hit bad enough your on land licking wounds but if it's just a flesh wound your back out their with swollen glands and all.

Moreton Bay Box (I think)
Was hit by one of these at Woody Point years ago and only once thank god. Now these things don't kill but they should as pain was intense and the sting zone was bleeding. Pain was so bad just the gental breeze would be unbearable. The wound bled for a few days and scaring was left for weeks after. All I can remember was the pain and how bad it was and how I never want to be stung by the little things again. The sting was a small cluster of crosses down the top of my foot so the things arn't really big. Pain lasted for at least 6 hours real bad and when hit your off the water full stop.

So their my favourite jelly stings in order of pain and hopeing I can add a few more to the list in my carreer. jellies are still not as bad as critter stings which can really mess up a kite session.

Thanks guys

greenleader - It brushed against the outside of my right leg between my knee and ankle when I was walking out there.

Thanks Gruezi - I'll definately come in next time just in case it was something more severe. We've seen five or so string rays down there lately, so just in case it's something more severe, I'll come in and check it out next time. I have quite a high pain thresh-hold, and I don't usually notice how bad the pain actually is, which is usually excellent, but sometimes could cause me to think it's better than what it actually is. Managed to get out yesterday also for 3 hours too 12m m80 and wlf with boots again... Great

Hardcarve1 - Thanks for all the info. When I first felt it, it was like a sharp zap to the area, and then was stinging after. I looked at it, and it was only slightly red and raised, and that's why I stayed out. Once I came in a good 3 hours or so later and it wasn't really itchy, just more red and raised. Now, 6 days later, it's itchy and more red and raised. At least the aloe-vera gel is helping I'll be more cautious next time with these things...

Thanks all

doesnt sound too bad liz,
Use some antihistamine cream on it that will take away the itching.
Go to the pharmacy and ask what they recommend, avoid tablets like phenergan as they make you sleepy.
