When jumping I occasionally end up facing the wrong way and flying backwards. When this happens I become disorientated and generally loop the kite and end up having a big wipe out. I ride in choppy conditions and try to use the chop to get extra height. I think my problem is that I’m turning to far into the wind and wave before I release my edge causing me to over rotate when going up. I may also be just trying to hard to get high jumps. Any tips on what the best way to stop this and how to better control the situation when it happens will be appreciated. Will have to go and see the chiropractor tomorrow to realign the neck after the last couple of wipe outs.

lean back in your harness more once in the air. It almost stops your rotation. I had the same drama and that was the advice given to me. It worked a treat. Someone with a little more experience might be able to shed some more light onto the matter for you.

If you have enough wind at the moment to even jump stop ya b1tchin!!

Just kidding. I was doing this occassionally when hitting little steep waves face on and accidentally leaning back on on my trailing foot too far which meant rotating around backwards and flying downwind upside down, the whammo on the back of the neck!!! Being dragged upside down backwards through the juice is not fun.

Weirdly after some advice on how to complete the backroll properly (which I wasn't actually intending on) I now know how NOT to invert.

I think maybe you need to lean your weight straight back a bit more, as in directly away from the kite, and less towards your trailing foot as this is maybe making you flip the board out to the side and up above your melon as you boost???

ok there are two ways this normally happens, if your hoplding your edge to long, have a slight poo stance and rip the kite back it can send you into a slow front roll.. too fix pull start with stance pull shoulders back push pevis up, make sure when you actually release your edge and jump don't just have the kite rip you up..
type 2. if you've got to much weight on your back foot and similarly instead of releasing your edge you lift the front foot and lean back usually this can result in a slow back roll.
so make sure you release the edge and make a jump of it..
if you start rotating you can excellerate it by tucking up and sometimes you'll make it. alternative is to make sure you pull your bar to your lead hip specially if unhooked.
bring the kite down harder infront of you can also straighten out your body as well

Maybe you are just trying to get too much air from the wave and the take off rather than your kite.
You'll get most of your lift from your kite, so don't go crazy trying to launch yourself off the wave, it just sounds like you are going way too far with your upwind cut and throwing yourself all off balance.
It's all about timing too and if you are concentrating on your board and the wave more than your kite, mayeb you are leaving your kite a bit late in the process.

Slow it all down and make for more subtle moves rather than really throwing yourself upwind.

exactly... just tuck your head into your shoulders and continue rotating... easy.
