Just wondering what everyones looking at getting before the winds return next summer.
theres been a few changes with the 5 line thing on kites and the FLEX thing with boards recently, which is making my 2 year old kit look seriously outdated. So if we're voting with our hard earned dollars, what do you like for your next buy???
I'm lining up for a couple of BEST Yargas -- 9m & 13m 5th line unbeatable pricetag. And a 132 FLX Underground.
Just wanna compare with what the more knowledgeable dudes out there are looking at.

Hey Daggy,

Sounds like you must be upset with what you have been riding, what was that? If you have solid gear that you have been happy riding last season, why would you spend money upgrading?

I mean you don't buy a new car every year just because there is a new model available. Why do you upgrade your kites and/or boards every year?

To all the newbies and beginners out there, there really is no need to upgrade your gear unless you have heaps of money and nothing better to spend it on. Any kite or board from 2003 onwards is quite OK for your purpose of learning to ride.

I have seen very few riders out there who can outperform their current gears potential, there are a couple but for the most part, the gear is way better than most can use.

I am really curious as to why people do upgrade each year? Fashion? Prestige? Ego? Keeping up with the Jones's? Better colours? Prettier pictures?

Jeez dude, lighten up. Ive been riding this kit for 2 years now, it was a superseeded kite when I bought it ,so yeah its an 02 model or before, a cabrinha ACCESS low aspect great dependable kite but if it's alright with you , I'd like something a bit faster ,sits further forward in the window and will do me for the next 2 or 3 years. The boards a 165 switch , easy planing and stable but I'm hoping you don't mind if I get something a little more exciting.
Really I was just hoping to hear some opinions on what others were liking in the new ranges, and also what sizes were most popular for an efficient Perth quiver.
feed back---- it's all good

For what it's worth daggy, the mentioned Yargas would be an excellent choice. I have both 04's and an 05 and love them. Nothing beats them for quality, value and performance. Most importantly, you'd be buying *kites* rather than the manufactured dreamboat of some marketing department's cooked-up lifestyle aspiration. [}:)]

No Worries Daggy,

It is a bit annoying that companies keep bringing out new gear every year and more often in some cases, it keeps the prices above what they need to be and to be perfectly honest, I don't think there was a great deal of difference between some companies 04 gear to their 05, in fact some even went backwards.

The hang gliding and paragliding industry did the same thing initially and it got to the point where upgrades were merely for the sake of saying "I've got the latest gear". This proved costly to the consumer due to lesser numbers manufactured and hurried/rushed designs resulting in moderate tweaks at best with less thought than could be over a longer period. I believe the Hang/paraglider industry, now releases new models every two years This makes great sense for all involved if you give it a bit of thought.

The newer gear would have had time to be thoroughly tested in all sizes and models, increases in performance would be just that, rather than a slightly tweaked version of last years stuff. The kiting industry has made most of it's major jumps in regards to quality/performance and R & D could slow down or at least be spread over two years.

Wouldn't you be happier to get cheaper kites every second year that would be of distinctly better performance and quality rather than recycled designs with slight tweaks at higher prices? Importers could afford to buy more models in the ranges at reduced shipping costs. Manufacturers could buy more materials at greater discounts for quantities and by doing so make more profit whilst we pay less for gear in the shops.

I'm not saying don't upgrade your gear, but lots of people replace their gear every year just for the sake of owning new stuff, there's really no need in most cases.

If you are riding 02 stuff, then it is time you upgraded because the 02 gear was OK at best compared with todays '05/'06 kites and boards and especially when you consider the innovations of safety systems.

Sorry if my message was misinterpretted or ambiguous in meaning. As you say, "It IS all good" What do you all think?

The yuppies involved in the kite scene are really into the gadgets and gimmicks in a big way.
Kite companys don't need design breakthroughs to sell kites every year, just bells and whistles.

These shopaholic suckers really do buy into all the hype.

Daggy this is a great question!

I am a noob to the sport and you do get caught up in marketing hype. I ask how do you not get caught up in it, How do you sift through 1000 posts on peoples opinions and get an honest view(most of them are ppl working for the kite companies and always say their kites are the most advance and best on the market)

I hope that some can offer some honest opinions on this topic because it will benefit all those looking to buy second hand or upgrade to a new kite.

Kitehard i reckon your right about the yearly upgrades, Car companies change designs every 5 years usually. Maybe kite companies need more time to push out better quality too.

Hey Uber,

The only way to get a truly unbiased opinion on the new gear is to ride it yourself.

Sometimes those who owns gear will talk it up even if it is pretty ordinary because they wont want to appear as a dill for spending the hard earned on inferior stuff, or, maybe they just don't even realise their stuff is average, or they haven't ever ridden anything else and are brainwashed by their own brands marketing. Thats fine, it makes them happy and more power to them. Ignorance truly is bliss

Anyone connected with a shop will tell you anything you want to hear as long as you buy the gear they sell (and why shouldn't they, they're trying to make a living and put food on the table and most shops will sell you good gear).

Almost every sponsored rider will of course be biased or if not, then unknowledgeable about other brands, so their advice is usually tainted in the bigger scheme of things. They will probably be well knowledgable on the range of their sponsors gear and will give good advice, this doesn't help though when comparing one brand to another.

Most reputable shops will have demo kites and boards for you to try which is the only way to decide if a particular piece of gear is good for you. As I have always said, what is one persons lemon is anothers cherry. Kiting is personal when it comes to finding what you like and what suits your riding style. Don't let people or magazines or websites tell you what's hot and whats not.

Some sponsored riders will be happy for you to take their gear for a spin if you demonstrate basic ability and courtesy. If you want to try my gear, as many have in the past, just rock up, introduce yourself and ask the question, no probs! I'm sure there are plenty of other spono'd riders who will do the same.

By all means ask others their opinions on stuff, but use their answers as a rough guide not gospel, and try and ride it yourself.

Kite hard and often!

Yeah - not quite but 'almost' sometimes .

Daggy you r one patient kiter. I too started out on an Access - great learner kite but I changed up to faster performance kites (SS Fuels) way quicker than you are planning to (always in a hurry )
Just thought Id let you know you are gonna be stoked - glad I had the Access to start sorting it all out but you are about to enter a whole new dimension ENJOY

Guys there's no argument, new kites *are* way better.

I ride 02/03 Aero 1's and an X2. Lately I've been out on 05 Vegas and Torch, both with 5th line, and some others. I'm instantly better on a new kite - they are a world of difference over mine. I was well impressed by the Vegas but 5 minutes into my session with the torch and I was in love with it.. just blown away.

Stepping back to my kites is like getting out of a new car after a test drive, and driving away in your old banger. It goes, but really it sucks after what you've just experienced. I've always loved them but my kites are slow, floppy, flappy, heavy on the bar, they don't boost or glide as well and are just harder work in comparison.

Look at the changes since 99 or even 01.. We are still in the R&D phase where kites are making major advances - and there's always some backward steps in that phase.. In 10 years maybe the design will have matured and we'll only see minor tweaks or fads.

Anyway, just my $.02, I can't afford new kites right now and when the time comes I'm sure those 06/07 models will kick some ass...

I am getting a windwing rapture 12m. I am a noob and have been learning on a 16m X2 and i am 105kg. The biggest advantage of moving to this new kite is that i will be much safer due to the massive depower, i have watched someone using one and you can take 90% of the power out out of the kite just by sheeting all the way out. This should mean no more dragging down the sand or mistaken high altitude jumps! Also it should be much easier for me to improve at the sport such as going upwind and easier relaunch.

I also liked the idea of a tap out system and 5 lines but i think i can achieve the same safety and performance benefits with the rapture. I have managed so far to spend very little on my kiting gear but now it's time to spend my bonus and get an awesome kite
