I'd like to try kiting on a surf board and was wondering whats the cheapest way of getting going on this. I've never surfed before (kiting now for two seasons)
options would appear to be: spend big bucks on a new underground, SS, airrush purpose built board approx $1200
buy a surf board (what size suits kiting) about $400
somehow put some straps on it - how much would that cost ??
or would an old school style directional board from 5 years back do the same job???

I bought a 6' surfboard for $300 last year and a set of straps and plugs from the sailboard shop $80 and glassed them in myself. Goes great. Some days the SS would be better, but some days mine probably is. Great for learning to ride waves, but dont try to do jumps as it will snap easy, and ive already ripped a fin out doing this. Lots of fun to ride without straps too! If the surf is small you dont need them. p.s (Im saving for a 5'10 slingshot)

Hi
Surfboards are a great way to enjoy the waves but only if the shape is right otherwise it is going to cause more frustration than it is worth .
The old directionals were designed to go upwind not to make tight turns therefor aren't any good .

It just so happens that I have 2 boards that will work well for sale
one is a 6'3" fiberglass already set up with straps , its easy to ride and surfs brilliantly .(only $350)or you can go the full deal with durability and allround performance with the Airush 6'2" (only $700)

Daggy,
You might want to look for a second hand "Stonker" directional board. They are a directional kiteboard but are no longer made by Stonker (market forces of everyone now riding twin tips?).
As for tight turning, I am not good enough to turn mine on a dime, but I have watched a friend (who is a surfer) carve some really tight turns with one.
Hope this helps.

before u fork out the big buks get urself a cheap small surf board like under 6' some cheap straps like dogsbody and put them in and some one on sea breeze will prob have a set of straps a lot cheaper and then u can get a taste and make shore its for you before u spend alot of money on something u might hate! and stay away from old directionals as they are not for the surf.. and try to stay away from big wave guns as they are made for big waves and drawn out turns not nice tight ones that you want to hit
