Spot on - the trick is indeed to reduce the risks.

Last year i copped grief for mentioning the attitude of some folks doing downwinders through the Floreat kids beach area.

Totally unneccesary to go close into shore on this 50m stretch when the run downwind to Brighton is around 2-3 kms.

Some bods in fairness are only doing a 200m run then walking back upwind to the Sth end of flozzer (not the kiddies section). However instead of stopping a mere 30m shorter they cruise through the kids section then walk back through the fams and kiddies.

When I asked a bloke why he felt neccessary to fly his kite a matter of 2m above the heads of people on the sands (instead of over the water - the water line drops down steeply so a when flying over the beach the lines are very low) he essentially told me to go hide the sausage with myself... strange and selfish attitude and definately increasing the likelyhood of disaster???

This is when things have got ugly with us when people don't listen, everyone gets an opportunity to adjust their behaviour but attitutes like this? now,... well we just don't tollerate it anymore.

I had a beginner flying in very light winds at a local doing some really weird **** like hot launching the kite sitting downwind with the LE jack upright, I could see from the car park that he had no leash at all. I got up the courage and went down, and just said,
"hey bro you from around here?"
"no"
"I'm one of the local crew and just wondered about some of your techniques here?"
and so on, he was actually okay and I gave him a lesson and he said he was going to get some more lessons back in city beach. It was good, and great result, but I knew I was edgy at the start. of course my biggest question was what did he think the kite was going to do when he let it go?????

approach situations cautiously and your more likely to a good result, starting a conversation about something else before bringing up the issue you want to raise is always a good start, other than that if they give you **** anyway tell them they are a disgusting waste of oxegen and you hope a great white does something worth wile for the greater good of the community.

Yes, allow plenty of room and make sure no one is in your killzone when you launch and land. That is 50m arc downwind of you from wind window. You often see experienced kiters think they know it all, launch and land right next to trees and people and sadly a lot of accidents are from them.
