Hi Guys, long time reader first time poster - i've enjoyed all the info on these forums. I was hoping someone could tell me if they have had any success carrying their kite gear on a motorbike. The backpack is pretty straightforward but what to do with the board - strap it to your backpack? There is a guy in the states that makes these pegs for motorbikes to carry boards, has anyone seen or used these?

Anyhelp with this would be fantastic cheers!

I have done it a few different ways over the years, including a couple of custom built (home made) racks. My racks worked well, but if you can't be bothered making any, just put the kite on your back and sit on your board.
If you sit on your twinie, it has to go sideways because of the straps, so don't forget about it and try to sneak between the lanes! if you ride a surfboard, sit on the nose and have the rest sticking straight out behind you. Works ok until around 60-70 km/h. You get a few strange looks, but it works fine.

If you have a twinnie I know with the Naish bags they have a couple of straps that allow you to attach your board to your bag. I wouldn't like the drag of the wind on the end of the board that sticks above your head!

I saw a postie type bike in Sydney the other day that had a surfer peg style set up on the back rack. That setup would probably work well for a shorter twinnie. If you have a more sports style motorbike you may be in for some trouble. If you own an old school Vespa PX you could get a front luggage rack. They are gold (Rode a Vespa from London to Italy a few years ago with my backpack on one)

Saw a guy on a pushie at the weekend with his board sideways on his back. Cars were giving him a wider berth than they usually do. The slingy bags have straps to put your board on vertically. I occasionally use this if I have to walk a bit to get to the water - twin tip only.

i did an overland indo trip with kites and surfboards on a motorbike. double board bag on the side, and kites in my kite bag on my back. worked a treat. the board rack was just two 'u' shaped hooks, the ones you see in kuta, bali.

When I had my motorbike I thought about doing it...

I saw one guy rock up down to Applecross in Perth with his kite on his back and his Board was just strapped across the pillion seat. Seemed like one of the easiest ways to do it if you've got a safe place to put straps under and around the pillion seat (don't want a hot exhaust cutting through your straps!)

Like Craigus said, don't lane split!

Carver Surf Racks make a rack specifically for any motorbike with a luggage rack. The rack keeps the board on the side and the side arms are removable.

They are distributed in Australia by www.charlespurtonimports.com.au You should be able to get their contact details off their website.

I was looking at getting a trailer for my bicycle so I can just pedal down to St Kilda from Prahran. I might look into getting one of those hook racks instead!

They're pretty pricey (about $120 for the motorcycle version when I got mine) but they were really decent quality and well worth it. I've had mine for two years and its still going strong.

awesome responses thanks heaps guys - I think I might go for a test ride with the board strapped to the back of the pillion seat, those carver racks look sweet as well. I need a luggage rack for my bike so getting it installed would kill two birds with one stone! Great to see the pics of what others have done cheers again.

Also I was wondering how it goes actually riding the bike with boards strapped on the side - does it get sketchy when its windy? As its always going to be windy when I have the kite gear strapped on haha!

I've only taken mine at 80km/h with 25-30 knot winds. Its a 100cc scooter so anything more than that and the engine sounds like its going to disentergrate so its not related to the board rack. Its more sketchy but not unmanageable and takes minimal getting used to.
