Does anyone have advise on adjusting line lengths. My front lines have stretched unevenly and one is 100mm longer than the other. Ideally I'd like to shorten them both a bit because the rear lines are on the last knot. Short of cutting and tying them is there anyone who will shorten them and re-stitch loops professionally... Or any other ideas?

BTW great to find this forum..I'm new to the sport,

Dont tie them fella. A knot in a line will reduce its strength by around 50%. Go to your local kite shop and find a sail maker/kite repairer in your area, let them sort it out for you I've seen a few guys "correct" their line lengths and completely stuffed it up. In WA we have a legend called Neil $20 to resleave 4 lines and get the lengths right.

If your front lines are that stretched then they are probably close to breaking - my advice is get a new set for around $120 to $200 for a set of 4.

Hi

Have ago your self! I cut a set of 25mtrs down to 20’s recently and they are ok. They don’t look quite like new buy they are strong enough so far!www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=5288

1. Mark the length you want on the line with texture
2. Cut off old sticking using razor blade (making sure you don’t cut sleeve cause you reuse this)
3. Slide sleeve down past texture mark cut line to new length
4. Re sew using the same criss cross stitching like the originals ( I used 80lb fishing braid)

Took me a few hours in front of the TV watching the footy and having a beer. I’ve used them in strong winds and no problems yet?

I’m sure someone will have something more professional but.

Cheers Gerard

For a quick fix to get back on the water...
Just shorten the leader line by 100mm.
Then go and buy some strings.
The kite will feel new again. Seriously.
I replace my lines every 6 months.

Is anyone allowed to tell me a good supplier of lines online or does that breach the advertising rule? BTW thanks for all the quick responses and nifty ideas...

You can buy a product called Q-Line, it can be knotted as the whole line is sleved. It's available in large rolls from most kite stores. Cut and tie yourself. Great for trying new line lengths.

Hey, instead of shortening those stretched lines you could always do the the opposite and use some pigails to lengthen the others...

When the lines are the only thing between you and the kite you dont want them to go wrong. Imagine the story if one line broke
I think just go and get some new ones done up. 200 is a small price to pay.

I think quite a few were removed from this topic.... Not just yours (Which I think is a good thing)

I checked out the Q-line and it looks like a far superior product. Thanks for all the advice... It always good to have a handle on how the gear works and also tips to get back on the water so Gerad's stitching technique is handy to know (thanks for posting the pics). I thought of lengthening the back lines with pigtails but with the uneven stretch in the front lines it would get a bit messy.I think I'll get myself a new set after the advice. I've never heard of anyone busting lines before..is it common?

Lines dont break often, but it isnt good when they do. Id be careful with the tieing of knots in them. I had my attachment ping while out on the weekend. Lucky I was far enough out for the death loops not to do much more than give me a quick ride in until my kite got nailed by a wave. That was becuase I did a dodgy knot to shorten it a little. The knot tried to pull through, but snapped instead.

Ive had a back line ping off the pig tail aswell. That was while I was on land and I did a quick trip while the kite looped. It hurt, but would have hurt more if there was something to hit or my kite did more than one loop.
